Yes, that'll be fine. You can either go for a latter 3D Mk5 one or a Mk6 3D beveled will also be fine. Go for Mk6 one looks better IMO.

My Eddy with a colour coded Mk6 3D beveled handle.....

I know from reading the forums now that the mk6 rear badge as above fits the mk5 golf.
On a couple of other forums there was a mention of the polo mk5 & mk6 badges fitting the mk5 also.
Can anyone confirm this?
I was also looking to replace the front badge on my mk5, will the mk6 fit the mk5?

The front VW emblem on the Mk5 GTI is just for that make/model and IIRC its type specific so no a Mk6 one will not fit. As to the rear the Polo one may well fit but why, are they cheap? Just get a latter Mk5 3D or a Mk6 one.

Yeh the polo rear badges seem to be more available & half the price of the golf mk5 & 6 on ebay for some reason

^^^^ Hard bit is removing the plastic boot trim. After that it's all plain sailing.
