just wondering if the vcds works on a merc as a basic scanner reader/reset tool? my dad needs a light resetting/reading but he lives some miles away and dont want him risking coming if its not going to work. ive used it on a hyundia and it worked but not sure about a merc

It only uses industry standard protocols...being OBD2
I've not tried it myself but apparently it scans and clears codes on BMWs...

Does Ross-Tech make diagnostic software for other makes of cars?
We do not currently have plans to develop manufacturer-specific software for any other makes of cars, but of course, all plans are subject to change. Current versions of VCDS can be used as a generic OBD-II scanner on many other makes of cars. Click here for more info.

As above the 'Generic OBD-II mode' in Vagcom can be used on theoretically any vehicle which has an OBD2 socket, with access to the following features:
