Title: Bollox!!
Post by: chris s on April 20, 2014, 12:03:18 pm
Well after giving the old girl a thorough clean I managed to reverse into my wife's car!!! End result is that my passenger door is bent out of shape. It's dropped about an inch and the outer edge has bent back and the front edge has bent inwards. Does anyone have this experience sort of damage??? Also can this type of damage be fixed or is it really a new door?

Fingers crossed... I'm hoping the hinges aren't too badly bent either

You can just see that the door latch is about an inch higher than the lock

Ouch, I guess you were reversing with the door open?

Have you tried loosening the door at the hinges and rehanging it? There is a fair amount of adjustment in them and it may be that you've knocked it out of line rather than actually bending the hinges.

Obviously that won't help the damage to the door skin but it might at least let you close the door properly until you get that sorted.

Yeah but the door swung open whilst moving... So stupid really!  Thanks for the tip on the hinges I'd not thought of that... Would be great to get the door shut

You and me both... If I can fix the hinge issue then fingers crossed the rest can be fixed by a new door skin and repaint... Then I'll have to look at my wife's cmax

You could always try what they do in the BMW Mini plant in Oxford when the Mini doors don't line up.... Brute force and ignorance

A quick update... Managed to manhandle the door shut so at least it can be driven to the body-shops.  It's looking like it's going to cost between £800-900 to have replacement parts fitted or £270 to have the panel beaten and existing parts used.  A massive difference but I'll be annoyed if it looks crap after it's done on the cheap.

If the hinges are ok you could buy a spare door and fit it yourself for a lot less.
They're very heavy and near impossible to do properly on your own but it's not that hard a job.

Been to a 3rd body shop who spotted the frame of the door has buckled inwards so his quote is likely to be £1200 ish. He also suggested sourcing a 2nd hand door from some where which would be a lot cheaper

Changed my stance on this and have made an insurance claim to
Cover both cars... May even get my rusty wings replaced instead of paying 25% through a warranty clam
