Title: My time here is drawing to a close......
Post by: NotNormal on October 14, 2009, 04:24:11 pm
......I've been offered good money for my GT170D so it's time for it to leave my ownership.

After 46000 miles, with only one issue (a sensor needed replacing), and @ 200+bhp since 800 miles old i shall be replacing it next week with this :

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fz312%2FNotNormal_photo%2FNewmotor1.jpg&hash=aa34db21cfd768ee7f578390828cdc66c0e51f43)

It's a 335d - 286bhp 430lbs/ft as std, one of the BMW 'Individual' range.

Presented in Arctic, with full leather, pro nav, iDrive, 19's, auto light's/wipers, garage opener, folding mirrors, media pack, comfort key/entry and start, + load of crap i've forgotten.

It's alittle older than i wanted, but with the spec and price i'm happy.

It's been a great forum, good bunch of people.

Nice one mate, looking at 335i myself (none of that devils fuel!)  :signLOL:

With the second hand prices for these 335i's/335d's im still amazed a lot of people opt for S3's as i can see much in it after a map?

Has to be a white one for me!

Have to agree although an S3 isnt a young guys hot hatch? I dont look very old (you can see in the random chat what do you look like thread)

I doubt many people believe the R32 is mine anyway, not many young people buy them as there all after easily tunable cars!

Nice mate, those engines are awesome. My Dad has that engine in a 5 series M Sport. His partner has had two also, both in X5's. One was remapped to 370ish brake with a WHOOOOOOLE load of torque! The new one is soon to be mapped also! DMS automotive are awesome with these engines btw!

Tom looks young too, and suits the S3, and course its a young hot hatch you goon! lol

Since when were £30k hatches 'young hot hatches'? When they came out they were driven by businessmen and still mostly are; same as the R32. There not really hot hatches either, more grantourers!

right..i was only having a laugh to start but as you mention it...im sure the hot hatch was a young mans hoot. And if not, anyone who drives one wants to recapture their youth? right?

and S3? grand tourer?

Lets see

£30k
High spec
Heavy
Interior focused
Comfort biased suspension

Where do you see it as Hot Hatch?

Hot Hatch
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdsgperformance.files.wordpress.com%2F2009%2F06%2Ffocus-rs-6.jpg&hash=5af9ad0c570891eed5a4fd70f368e5daa1e61d61)

Gran Tourer
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.channel4.com%2F4car%2Fmedia%2FA%2Faudi%2Fs3%2F03-large%2F08-audi-s3-f3qa.jpg&hash=33f3ddc113dedc17fa6e22a890bfe446f4eb6a0a)

The day im offended by someone slating my car when they own a diesel will be a sad day  :signLOL:

I have similar power and weight to an S3 so you are saying the S3 is a grantourer then  :happy2:

Diesels - suck

Im glad I stopped watching the footy, im tuned into this!  :happy2:

I would definately have to disagree with the grantourer comment, I would defo class the S3 as a hot hatch! I see a grantourer as a car that weighs the earth with a big lazy naturally aspirated engine!  :happy2:

e.g.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmybroadband.co.za%2Fvb%2Fpicture.php%3Falbumid%3D15%26amp%3Bpictureid%3D54&hash=310def88da6074278a3b5d9534cc927b2d41d7f2)

to be honest, id say a grand tourer is more of a big comfy car that pulls well and has lots of space. and to be honest i would still call the r32 a hot hatch!

ah i dont know...maybe my lack of work and social life have deluded my many years of car enthusiasm! that or jules has been smoking crack!! haha! i love this thread

Sorry to see the Golf going, but you'll definitely enjoy the 335d!

Get yourself over to www.e90post.com, an excellent forum for BMW's, where there are many 335d owners who will be only too glad to share their knowledge on how to extract more power from the beast!

For remapping, Evolve or DMS are the popular companies used. Enjoy your new car!

Love the 335d, drove one which had a DTUK tuning box on it and the amount of torque would rip your neck off   Great cars but an old mans car! I've recently taken in a 330i which is quick and a bargain at only  :surprised: £17k i'm was very tempted. I'm just looking forward to getting my hands on a ED30 tbh now

Thanks, i still get to see the Golf, a friend brother is having it  :happy2:

Congrats from what I hear the 335d doesn't hang around. Nice to see you've moved up mate well done :happy2:

Thanks, TBH i missed my S4 (B6), and the 335d will be a happy meduim between econ and power

i wanted a 325D instead of the golf but they are holding used prices very well at the mo and just couldnt strech my budget!

I had a quick go in a 525d the other day, just because i could, drove well -nice cars.

very nice car the 335d is a missile , and the remap route is open to you as well
enjoy  :happy2:

Already on the case remap-wise ...... 350bhp 500lbs/ft

Enjoy the new car but make sure you pop in from time to time and say hello!  :drinking:

Yeah, they offer great value for money / performance 2nd hand

I wasn't too bothered about colour, more spec and miles

TBH, real world driving they offer the same perfromance 335i and 335d. Just the d has better econ. The engine doesn't have 'that' diesel sound either  :signLOL:

I looked at a few of these before going for my S3 but it would have looked as though I was driving my dads car!  :chicken:

When i was 22 i had a 400bhp Evo 6, then an Audi S4 (B6) @ 26......i've had all the "ya borrowed it off ya dad" comment, water off a duck back tbh  :P

Glad we cleared that one up

S3 - Grantourer
R32 - Bus
335i - awesome

I dissagree about the diesel suck comment tbh, they have come along way - i think you'd be suprised by  some on the road

Can only speak from experience by saying Evolve will definitely look after you. I went up there for their dyno day a few months ago, and was suitably impressed. Imran & the other guys are a good bunch of lads.

Andy from DTUK is very helpful too, had a couple of boxes from him in the past.

Whats your username on e90post? I'm still on there as webby318dEMS.

Good choice I think there Tom, I was looking at them after you mentioned it the other day. Theres literally nothing you can fault them for on paper.

But.... arent they all auto's? Is that only the brand spankers?

Yeah, all the 335d's are auto with tiptronic padel shift.

The 335d's have the newer style ZF auto box, alot more direct shifting, not like the 535d's that have quite a long wooley shift.

good friend of mine had a 535d when they came out, not silly fast but the torque!!! would imagine in a 3 series with a map would be silly!!! nice choice :happy2: they struggle to crack 30 mpg though which always seemed to defy the object of a diesel to me, but some love diesel engines and it is the best i think.

The thing is with them, if you want to, you can get 500+ on a tank. 75-80 on the motorway will easily return a great mpg. Giving it a spirited drive will return 28-30 mpg. For a car as heavy as the 5, with all the toys, and 300+ bhp, in my eyes that's a pretty impressive all round car. I can only assume in the 3 series it's evenbetter

90 quid to fill!!! im not bashing it jay, its a great engine, i would prefer a 330ci which will get same mpg but have the feel and sound of a petrol, although the diesel would kill it i know.

With a semi-spirited extended test drive of this car i hit 32mpg, no lower.

When my 2.0DTi 170 golf was standard on a simmilar drive i only got around 34/34mpg - and the type of power is totally different.

The 535d is 272bhp, old style g/box (make a difference) where as the 335d's are 286bhp, alot better mapping and a more eficiant g/box.

Agreed, once mapped, fuel efficiancy increases as does the power - depending on choice of mapping from 340bhp to 360bhp and 500lbs/ft to 550lbs/ft. (550lbs/ft being limited by the gearbox)

Like you say, it sould be a good all round work stead as well as making it a fun drive out of hours

I'm sorry, but real world driving against book figures in comparison - you will NOT get anywhere near simmilar fuel econ figures.

My firends just sold a 330ci in favour for an S2000, on a steady eddie run driving miss daisy he saw 27mpg, people running these cars on e90post don't see that kind of econ even when driving hard.

On a steady eddie run mid 40's , not to be sniffed at  - and as petrol and diesel are teh same price(exactly around here) then the diesel has more appeal.

And you still get a nice engine note too  :signLOL: for a diesel

It's not 90 quid to fill I don't think? I think its a 65 litre fuel tank. So that's 70-75 for vpower? Might be wrong, been a while since I gave my dad a free tank of fuel! Lol

MR Not normal goes all normal.

Keep us informed of any mods you do.
Best shaped Coupe on the market in my opinion. I considered buying one of these, would look the shiz on some deep dish wheels.  :driver:

And as for Jules you are a star. I hope in ten years time you come back and read your posts on these forums I am sure you will look back and laugh with us.  :notworthy: :notworthy:  :signLOL:  :notworthy: :notworthy:

I think we should nominate you as our star in a reasonably  slow  priced car.   :congrats:

Not sure why everyone got so uppity? I simply said the S3 was a GT, its not a derogatory comment?

I then have JPC come with the usual silver spoon type crap when i work very hard for my car.

I simply state my opinions on a free forum and have abusive, derogatory replies. Im never offensive so not sure why everyone has a problem?

No one has a problem with you, a lot of what you say makes sense and you normally get your point across very well. Its just the way you answer each time it comes across very defensive, Almost like you doth protest to much.
Take VC he spends a lot of time on here with lots of us pulling the r 32 strings sometimes serious sometimes not but he never retorts he puts himself above it, Like he knows and understands what is better about the R and is comfortable with it. The opposite of you.

I had a 335d a couple of years ago, mapped by Simon at emaps, to approx 350bhp/520ftlbs, relentlessly fast, would hang off the bumpers of many a car. I have eibach suspension also to help looks and handling, but ultimately, just not the drivers car that I was after - it is a slush box after all, not dsg/SMG.  I don't do a massive mileage a year - 15-18 k per year, so a petrol suffices mpg wise, and after a string of fast hatchbacks, the BMW felt  just too grown up(I'm 36 with 3 kids!!!).

If I did more mileage and could afford a 2nd car, Porsche or so, then one would definately be on my list again.

It doesn't sound like a diesel, far from it, and I'm sure for you, coming from a diesel will tick all the boxes and more. Enjoy it, and especially enjoy embarrising some more exotic cars- e46 m3's were a favorite if mine. Oh and take it from me, ditch the sh*tty run flats, completely transforms the handling and ride.

Enjoy

Happily called my car a bus  :signLOL:

A lot of people go to unnecessary lengths, like silver spoon comments. I work very hard for my car so im quite defensive about it!

I work very hard for my cars, but they are just cars at the end of the day, guess that's why I'm always changing mine!

And Jules I don't know you personally , but your posts are easily recognisable, you are quite happy to openly slate other cars, but if a bad word is said against the R32, you get all sensitive. Just enjoy the banter and don't take it all so personally, I have taught myself to double read everthing to ensure I have understood before replying , and the same with anythibg I write. All the best

The 335d is a great car especially when re-mapped. Visit DMS Automotive down in Southampton. Great guys and a really good map!  :happy2:

Didnt slate the S3 or the 335 though? Yet this thread ended up the same as usual, i say something bad (although it was just that the S3's a GT) and it ends up with someone saying the R32 is sh*t! Can you blame me?

I work 50+ hours a week to afford my car on top of my £920 rent, its more than just my car; its my hobby and enjoyment.

pipe down fresher! I was only joking at first, then you were so blatently nearly crying about your r32 it was a laugh to see how far you go. You really do make a target for yourself all across the board and really show your age. Not just on this thread. I just hope you've learnt not to take things quite so seriousy on here and just chill out.

You really do start bleating like a little lamb when someone puts a foot wrong with the r32 comments. Yet, you happily slate anything other!

I really really hope you take things like the rest of us on here soon. This has got to ge one of the most chilled out and humourous forums out there so sit back and enjoy.

I'm offering a friendly hand here, I just hope your mature enough to take it on board!

I was talking about the S3, not the R32 and was not at any point crying over it - i even agreed with your bus picture mate. You should re-read the thread. The thread was about the S3 and diesels, you brought up the R32 and i dismissed it instantly with a joke; you then carried on to the silver spoon rubbish
Your whole post is full of condescending put downs (highlighted), you even start with the equivalent of shut up. I dont see how my personal responses can show my maturity, i manage 15 people everyday, all of them older than me but all listen to me and do as i instruct.
I never got offended and joked about my car in this thread, agreeing with your bus picture, while you were being repetitively condescending and dismissive (the usual traits of someone with a high post count and high following of bandwagon jumpers)

Take VC he spends a lot of time on here with lots of us pulling the r 32 strings sometimes serious sometimes not but he never retorts he puts himself above it, Like he knows and understands what is better about the R and is comfortable with it. The opposite of you.

The .:R32 is what VW themselves call the balanced Golf, not designed to be the fastest to 60 (thats what the GTI is for), nor the best on mpg etc etc. it was built as a flagship that was a good 'all rounder'

nothing more so pointless being precious about something its not. i get my a$$ handed to me regularly by other cars but i roll with tunes not race with idiots so p1ssing contests simply dont bother me  :innocent:

i can afford to go out and by something crazy if i really wanted.

i dont.

i wanted a fat heavy fridge....but she's my fat heavy fridge and we love each other
