Title: New tyres time....again
Post by: Woody.Guern on April 22, 2014, 10:17:44 pm
Hi Peeps,

Need two new front tyres on my std Ed30.

I have narrowed the choice down to Michelin pilot sport 3, Dunlop sport maxx  or Goodyear Eagle F1 assy 2

I currently have 4 Conti 3's, the rears are good, less than half worn however the fronts are shot after about 8k!  Fronts have a hard time here in Guernsey, no speed as such, but constantly turning, also got through both steering joint boots, car has done 27k!!The contis are good but i am looking for a longer lasting tyre.

So any thoughts / advice / opinions would be appreciated, I can't seem to find a recent post on this, so looking for some more up to date info etc.

Thanks for your time, even tho' this has probably been thrashed previously!!

Paul

I have Michelin Pilot Sports 3 and they are brilliant in the dry and wet. Give good feedback and last long as they did 29,000 miles rotating front to rear.

I went for the Michelin PS3 for my ED30 also - no regrets!

If it helps, Michelin are doing £30 cash back if you buy two 18" tyres:
http://www.michelin.co.uk/tyres/special-offers/fuel (http://www.michelin.co.uk/tyres/special-offers/fuel)

I used click on tyres as they are part of the cashback offer: http://www.clickontyres.co.uk/ (http://www.clickontyres.co.uk/)
Ring them up and ask for more discount (i got free delivery last time)

In case you do fancy the Good Year F1's, GY are offering £20 cashback on 2 F1's. Click on are also part of this promotion: https://www.goodyear.eu/uk_en/tire-advice/free-fuel-promotion/

Dunlop are also doing £20 Cashback but i cant see where to search for participating dealers: https://www.dunlop.eu/dunlop_uk/what_sets_dunlop_apart/promotions/ (https://www.dunlop.eu/dunlop_uk/what_sets_dunlop_apart/promotions/)

Hope this helps

Rich

I had the same with Continentals. Rubbish life (fronts 8k miles, rears 10k) so I know where you're at with that. I've always stuck with Michelin except for the brief excursion into Conti country, and they always last much better (until the wife puts a nail in them).

Just looking for a full set at the moment and found the cheapest place to be Tyre leader (http://www.tyreleader.co.uk/) with free delivery as standard.

I had the continental 3 sports on, well still have two and they are the worst tyres iv ever had on a car, I changed to Goodyear f1's and so much better. Carnt wait to burn the my other two continentals out and have a full set good f1's on great tyres.
I was always Bridgestone ponteza before that but the forum converted me

I swear this forum is sponsored by GY F1's  :signLOL:
so how are the F1's better than Bridgestone potenzas?
how many less miles did F1's do....my main concern commuting in a diesel  :ashamed:
my Potenza S001 do 30K a year on the front.

I had the pontenza's on my previous cars 306gti6 and ep3 type r, but seeing the reviews everyone gives the F1's I just decided to go with them. Only had my f1's on a few months and put them on the back to scrub these naff conti sports out, so I'll know more then and how many mile I'll get out of them. I was only getting about 6k on pontenza's so happy if i get that with F1's I only do that in 12 months anyway...

I Carnt say I notice much difference between the two but it was 4 years ago when I had my last car and 100bhp between them

Im gonna throw a curve ball in and say vredestein sessanta or the newer vorti. Had both, great price, very good grip in the dry, excellent in the wet. Just a touch noisey when theyre closer to depth minimum

Hi,
Thanks for all the input, appreciate your time
Decided Goodyear or Michelins, just waiting for a price locally, think I will go for the Goodyears, think they might wear better..?
Thanks for the links to online suppliers, but dosn't work like that here in Guernsey, cheaper to go to tyre fitter, as carriage and VAT make buying online more expensive, and then the tyres need to be fitted!

I,ll let you know what gets fitted, and my first impressions.

This is good info  :happy2:

I'm just wondering did you order your tyres and have them delivered? I only ask I recently ordered 4 goodyear tyres from camskill not even knowing this promotion was on.. The goodyear website say they are a participating retailer but looking through the Ts&Cs of the offer it seems to state: '13. Tyres must be fitted at point of purchase.' So i'm not sure if delivered tyres will count for the cashback? Will be a great bonus if they do though!

I got mine (PS3's) delivered and the claim form came with the tyres. Perhaps drop Camskill an email asking them to email / send you a claim form? You have noting to lose but £40 to gain!!

No one seems to point out that the Goodyear Assy 2 is a rather soft tyre. That's good for comfort and noise levels but bad for steering response and feedback. It all depends what you want from the tyre. I recently fitted a set of the Goodyears and now I wish I went for a harder tyre - perhaps the Michelin PS3?

Surely a softer tyre grips better tho?

Maybe he means that the tread blocks have some give in them? I don't know, I'm happy with my F1s

I do know that when I had winter tyres on (really soft) it was a bit twitchy cause of the tread moving.. That's the only thing I can't think he means...?

Fired off an email to camskill and they confirmed that goodyears have to be purchased and fitted together at the same time by the retailer so no cashback sadly  :sad1:

It's the sidewall structure on the Goodyear that is quite soft and flexible in comparison to many other performance tyres. Nothing wrong with the grip. Basically it is the same effect you get with the winter tyres that you explained there, although nowhere near as major.

Finally got Michelin ps3's fitted to the front, quite a noticeable difference, seem toget a lot more feedback from the road surface, and all for £106 each fitted and balanced.
Would definitely reccommend these!
Thanks for your input,
Paul.

I've just ordered a set of 4 Goodyear F1 Ass 2. I've previously had them on my P1 & they were very good. I usually get my tyres from tyreleader they are by far the cheapest though you have to pay for fitting seperately.
