Title: New Bulbs!
Post by: safc88 on April 29, 2014, 02:55:04 pm
Hi All

One of my dipped beam bulbs has gone so it's time for a change!

Could anyone recommend some bulbs please and if possible some online links (not HIDs) also some sidelights if possible!

Its a 55 plate if that helps at all

Have a look at osram night breakers or philips extreme (I think that's what they are), sidelight bulbs I've gone for some philips 5w5 ones which you can pick up for £4 off ebay.

Thanks

Do you know what the fitting is for the dipped beams?

Autolamps Cobalt 2 give you the best "xenon look" light on the road.

Osrams will give you a much brighter yellow light and are twice the price of these.  :ashamed:

Philips X-treme Vision are about the best you can get for light output. Depending on where you buy from, you can quite often get a set of sidelights thrown in for free.

I had Philips x-tremes, would say they were the best light output. Changed them over to ultra powers. Not the best, but I prefer the look of them. It's a much whiter glow. Got both them off amazon.

Sidelight wise, I have some led bulbs.

You might not fail an MOT but aren't they dangerous for the mechanics? I'm sure it's wayyyy overloading the maximum amount.

surely the fuse would blow if it was pulling too much current, before the wire melted or something? isn't that what the fuse if for?

I think the issue is more of frying your wiring harness than fuses to be honest.

I've decided to get the Philips Xtreme Vision.

Got the dipped and main in the h7 fitment and powerbulbs had an offer on and have chucked in some free osram w5w sidelights.

Now this will sound stupid but I've had a look and I can't get my hand in behind one of the lights to swap them so I am looking at paying a garage to change them all. Is there an easy way at getting at them before I pay someone?

you need small hands and a lot of patients.
go slowly, see hoe the holder is orientated when you take it out as it has to back in exactly the same position.
sidelight bulbs are really fiddly as you can't see what to pull on, but they just pull out, small nose pliers might help, get hold of outside of black holder and not the wires..

Wiggle the sidelight bulbs rather than pulling straight out. Worked better for me anyway

I have the Mtec super white 55w in my current GTI which are perfect colour but looking for something brighter to go in my Pirelli when I get it, are the 100w a nice upgrade to the 55w mtec bulbs? And still the same colour

Yeah did exactly this in mine, would say 100w are about 20% brighter, had them 8months with no problems so far, others on here are using 100w Mtecs as well.

all ok so far, he said not wanting to test fate  :signLOL:
Mtec must sell loads of these, the only problem is that they are for offroad use due to 55w legal restrictions. They are no way as bad or as bright as HID kits, which I have had in the past. There is going to be a safety factor designed into the wiring loom, usually stress safety factors are 8 times, only guessing....
