Title: Key Fob replacement ideas
Post by: fazi123 on May 08, 2014, 11:38:58 pm
Hi guys,

My 2 key fobs are looking pretty tired, and was wondering if there was a recommended fob / casing you guys use in order to bring them back to life?

Thanks,
Faz

I just use the blank VW key fobs from eBay, not expensive (can be had for under a fiver) and generally is straightforward to swap over the remote board, blade and immobiliser chip. The only thing you need to watch out for the the spring mechanism that flips the key, it can be easy for it to spring out for freedom! Disassembly instructions can be found here - http://www.my-gti.com/2766/change-battery-in-folding-key-with-remote-control-for-volkswagen-golf-jetta-passat-rabbit-and-gti

£26 for a key fob cover!? Jesus. Might look at a new fob though, mine are looking a bit worse for wear too.

If it's just your buttons that are worn, get one of these.  You obviously have to take the original fob totally apart to remove the buttons section, but it's easy and looks like new once done.  Bargain!  :happy2:

There is plenty of cheep ones on eBay from China. They take about 2 weeks to arrive after ordering, but they only cost about   Fiver and they look great.

I was too scared to do this as I read somewhere that a guy couldn't get his transponder chip out and damaged it! Ended up going to the stealers for £160 new key

I bought 2 new cases off eBay from a uk seller. Took about 15mins to swap, fitted new batteries and now I effectively have 2 new keys.

Unless the transponders have been glued in you should have no issues.

If your transponder is glued in nail varnish remover should unstick it.

Will that work? I bought a blank keyfob off ebay to switch things over. Everything was easy except for the transponder. I didn't fancy chipping away at the glue with a knife because knowing my luck it would break/damage the transponder.

Nail varnish remover, super glue remover or thinners all work well.

So the keys don't require re programming when being taken apart? That's just a myth?
