Title: differnt intercooler options, please explain
Post by: Jeffchiz on May 10, 2014, 11:06:47 am
Hi all, im looking in to getting an intercooler for my mk5 gti if the price is right

ive been looking at these twin intercooler kits on ebay.

From what i can make out they sit in front of the oem cooler, and mount to existing bolt holes and come with the right pipe work to connect the two coolers together?

Firstly is this right? and secondly are they any good or the usual ebay rubbish?

and secondly am i right in thinking ive read somewhere that the oem s3 cooler is an upgrade on our gti's and it fits in place of the old one? ie no custom work needed?

Obviously i know there are more expensive kits out there such as forge but im not paying that much, this gti isnt my toy that im spending all my money on i would just like to get a little extra power out of it before a remap

You'd have no perceivable benefit in changing the intercooler or messing around with it at all unless you are going past Stage 2 and driving your car aggressively on a regular basis.

hi thanks for the response

i was going to fit an evoms intake and a turbo back exhasut (havent settled on brand yet which i could also have some advise on) and i thought a intercooler would be a perfect addition to these mods with a remap

what other supporting mods are advised with a stage 2?

when i say this car isnt my toy, i do love it and it gets used everyday and on occasions aggressively, i just have another car which is my baby that ill never part with lol

i am used to n/a tuning so turbo cars are a huge learning curve for me

Evoms intake is a good bit of kit, with exhausts there's many brands out there with mixed reviews BCS/Milltek/Blueflame/APR its just picking the right system for yourself. I've fitted an Airtec twintercooler to my stage 2+ Edition 30 and I feel the benefits when I use my heavy foot. :happy2:

No point getting a intercooler on gti with the mods you suggested.

S3 cooler is a straight swap, you just need slightly longer bolts.

eBay intercoolers are ebay intercoolers. IMO best bang for buck cooler is s3 cooler then past that a AIRTEC IC.

At what point would an intercooler be appropriate?

Stage 2/2+ or on hot days or if your doing track days or just like ragging  your car etc, although the addition of an IC will help even a stock car. A fair few threads knocking around on here wirh stats of such things.

I have just sold my Audi S3 2007 which was Revo Stage 2+

It had the Revo FMIC installed so once I have gathered all my spare parts together I will have the OEM FMIC for sale so watch the classifieds section.

I fitted an uprated FMIC to mine becuase the standard boost hoses and bayonet clips are terrible so was constanly boost leaking! (this was with a new DV so the problem was the hoses for sure) I wanted to hard pipe it all so I thought i may aswell fit a better core while i'm at it. Certainly worth is as the car pulls much better now and holds the power for longer

Once you sort out a TBE Itll be good too see what you make with the mishimoto intercooler mate, that's obviously if you map it that is  :P
