When my cars been sat for a while like on a morning and when I leave work it splutters when I turn the key then after a few turns of the engine it fires up, but when I start the car when it's warm or in it not long ago it's fire straight away. It's a little embarrassing when the neighbors 12 year old French clutter starts after one turn ha.
Any ideas why this happens?

Have a read of this: http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,498.0.html
My ed30 does it too, as did my last GTI, and my mates does too.

Thanks for that, I read the whole thing last night. It makes sense in that thread as it says the engine has to be turned over to get the fuel pressure up before starting as the fuel pump is ran of the cam shaft, which makes sense but it's funny how some gti's do and some don't splutter.
It also read something about vw using two different batteries the better one being the 72ah and the weaker one 70ah, I went out side and my car has the 70ah one so think il change it to a stronger one and see how it goes. My car is on a 07 reg and still has the original batterie so I think it'll be worth trying a stronger one and see how it goes but if not il leave it as it seems to be fairly common.
Cheers :happy2:

Mine is 07 with the 70A battery too. Let me know how you get on :happy2:

Mine does this and still does even with new battery fitted :sad1:, but it always starts 'touches wood' .... some mornings its a surprise you expect it to take a couple of secs and it fires straight ! its all fun and games i have decided now :happy2:

Yeah mine always starts up but like you said one day it's a little quicker than other but I don't think I've ever had it start straight away when first started for that day but I never have to turn the key twice as it seems some do on that thread?
What bat did you have in and did you go or a stronger one?
-
No i have never needed to turn key twice.. I had an original Valeo battery 70ah i believe only really changed it to try the theory out and plus it was now 7 yrs old, so thought it wouldn't hurt.

Make sure you allow enough time for the fuel pump to pump up the fuel pressure, prior to turning the key.. Mine fires 1st flick always even now after 72k mileage :happy2:

Mine always starts on the first turn, just sometimes turns over a couple of times first.
It's a very common "feature" of the 2.0 TFSI

Yeah I always do that I put ignition on wait till lights go out wait a couple of seconds then start with clutch down, always done that in my cars but this one makes no different to how long i leave it. It seems very hit and miss with this engine some do and some don't.
You turn the keys and you can hear it splitting trying to start then after a few turns it kicks into life, I hate starting it when people are near my drive
I wonder if changing the fuel filter will make any odds? Il be changing that and everything when I service it next month anyways but il change the batterie anyways as it can't have much life left after being the original on a 07 car. Then if no differences il just leave it and accept I have one of the bangers  .
Do you guys know if the mk6 R and ed35 do this? Just with it being the same engine but 'newer' ?
Cheers

Fitted a 75ah battery to mine just because I felt the original was getting a bit weak, it hasn't changed the spluttering on startup. As above, mine always starts first turn of the key. But it's often not very quick to start up. It doesn't worry me any more but I was quite concerned for a start!
My 16 year old Land a Rover starts up better every time
