Title: Help buying & installing new head unit
Post by: AsciiSmoke on May 19, 2014, 04:33:29 pm
Hi Guys,

Was hoping you could help me out.

I have a 2005 Diesel GT DSG that I'd really like to replace the head-unit in (and probably the front speakers).

I really want something that fits neatly (i.e. has the tapered sides, not a square unit with a plastic adapter).

It's also gotta have Bluetooth and a decent screen without gaudy colours (basically, I want it to look factory fit without having to spend the ridiculous money that VW want).

Finally, I need someone to fit it for me preferably someone who'll visit my work. I really have no patience to try for myself especially considering having to find the right adapters and such.

All-in I'm hoping to get it done with or without the speaker replacement for under £400.

Can anyone recommend a fitter / supplier near Farnborough, Hampshire?

Find a RNS510 sat nav B version (Think it will work with your car without causing any battery drain)

Plenty about for £400 ish and fitting is simple , you can do it easily yourself - Your speakers are fine - How many do you have in your GT ?

Here's one on ebay

Offer him £350 and pay someone to fit it if you don't think you can

That won't give you Bluetooth. The vw option will set you back £90ish on top.
Saw this thread today, but no idea of sound quality,

RNS 310 would fit then bill. Unit costs £200 - £300 of eBay then budget another £100 or so for the Bluetooth module. Mine works well and hasn't caused any battery drain problems even when the car was sat still for over a week.

If you really won't consider going down the DIY route (strongly reccomended as its easy) these guys are quite close to you with a good reputation - http://www.satnavsystems.com/main/

RNS315 on Ebay at £290 buy it now. With bluetooth.  :happy2:

There may be more, but that was the first one I found.

Ah but problem with those is they won't support the Highline display in a Mk5. Good price though!

Won't there be some battery drain if you put in a RNS315?

This is the short of thing I was concerned about. That's why I was looking for a specialist.

Yep, at least another £70 to the bill if going RNS315.

Don't forget you'll still need the Bluetooth module, plus probably a GPS aerial and FM radio adaptor on top.

Very nice, thanks. But I can't go as high as £450, especially as I'll still need to get it fitted.  :sad1:
