I have decided to attempt to change the rear brakes and disks on my Ed30.
I am not a complete novice (seen every wheeler dealer at least twice :happy2: ) but would like some advice on what tools I will need (I figure the cost of labour will be the same as it will cost to buy most of the tools)
Tools I believe I will need:
Trolley Jack
14mm multi-spline too
13mm and 15mm spanner
genuine Volkswagen grease for back of pads
Caliper rewind tool
Most importantly: latex gloves
I have found this howto video for standard mk5 and it looks straight forward, but could do with knowing if this is missing anything I should know
http://www.vwgenuineparts.co.uk/vw_golf_rear_pads_and_discs_replacement.shtml
I am in Nottingham so if some knowledgeable person in Nottingham would like to help out that would be appreciated.
Also where is the cheapest or best place to get the OEM parts for this and does anyone know what to search for?
My Touran is due for the same soon so I may try on the Touran first.
How would I know if the discs need doing? Is there a minimum size or should I just change them as well anyhow?
Thanks in advance.

Looks like you have listed most of the tools you need.
I need to replace mine and have never done it before so once I get the kit am going to attempt it.
The videos look straight forward but I would say the most difficult part will be loosening any seized bolts I presume

Hi all Im also a novice. This weekend I have just replaced al the pads, discs and calipers...upgraded to larger units.
It is a pretty simple job IF it all goes to plan.....the hardest part is winding back the piston, can be tricky. All I'm all fairly simple, if you are unsure get it done, as brakes are brakes and you only get one chance.
Remove the top from the cap from the fluid.....
Remove wheel
Remove bots from rear of the caliper
Remove old pads
Clean up where need
Wind back caliper.....if this it HARD you may want to re attached the caliper (without the pads) wind it back them remove again to refit the pads
Use little copper slip on the pads and fit
Refit caliper
Spin make sure they are turning
Slowly press pedal to gain pressure back
Check handbrake also
Spin disc again to check
Spin...press brake.....2 or 3 times to check
Fit wheel
Check fluid level, top up if needed
Repeat o other side. ONLY do one wheel at a time.
Hope this helps

Found the pads pretty straight forward to do but as johnny mentioned resetting the piston can be a bit of a ballache especially with the difference in thickness from a totally worn pad and a brand new one. I found the discs were pretty tough to access with regards to removing the carrier so had to get the disc done elsewhere. Im sure plenty have managed to change their rear discs easily on here though!

The trickiest bit I found was getting to one of the 14mm spline bits to free the caliper.
Im in Beeston if I can be any help

I ended up getting the garage to do them.
They ended up breaking their SnapOn spline tool trying to get the splines off so glad I did not attempt it myself on some axle stands.

Did mine last weekend the spline bolts were a bitch to undo had to break out my massive knuckle bar just to get them started when undoing them.
