hey peeps, is £160 for new vw key, with the alarm bit worth it? not from vw, from a local key cutting place, I asked the guy how much, he hesitated few about 20 seconds with hmmm ahh and said 160, then asked him what about just a key no alarm, hesitated again and quoted £80, I then said cant you do it any cheaper? replied no, then I said is that your fixed prices or varied prices as a joke, then replied angrily with its fixed prices mate lol, so asked again why did you have to think about the price and hesitate then? he shrugged.. lol :fighting: :stupid:

Assuming its the model year in your sig, the later MKV's have encrypted immobilisers (immo4c) so I think it's a dealer only job that to program the keys. :sad1: I know the earlier ones (2004-06) can have spare keys done quite cheaply, I managed to get a spare one done for a MY2004 Golf for around £50-60 via my VW specialist and everything worked fine on that.
-
Immo4c is not dealer only - plenty of people out there and can supply and code a key for a lot less than £160
-
I had a similar problem, most local key cutters I contacted could not do the job because they needed a special tool.
I could only find one person who did it for about the same price as you have been quoted which was still cheaper that the dealer.

Just rang VW dealer price was £215, looks like I'm going to the local key cutter then haha! 160 it is then :driver:
-
My local key place, Fast Keys in Wickford (Essex), charged £130. Make sure they reprogram all keys so the old lost one no longer works.
-
I paid £160 for a new key for my bora a while back. Then found it in the back of my mates skyline. Doh.
-
I need to go back now lol, airbag light on the dash and mfd display says airbag fault grrrr :fighting:
-
Yep I lost 1 of my keys to my gti around 2 years ago and it was around £170 for the new key and coded in etc from VW,an independent lock/key specialist wanted around the £150 mark !!
-
Got a spare 3 button key made up for my 05 plate through VW. Worked out with coding £170  Mugged
-
Prices shot up as usual :sad1:
-
Prob wont make you feel any better, but a friend of mine recently paid well over £300 for his Range Rover key and fob!
-
Shop around with your local VW indies: I use VGS in Kent. £80 for a key on my 56 plate.
-
The guys who did mine were very good, although I had the airbag light pop up I called them, they sent the guy to to my area this time and connected vcds and cleared it  :happy2: :driver: good service £160 not too bad, key looks of good quality also along with the fob/alarm
