Title: Budgets
Post by: stealthwolf on December 09, 2008, 07:18:37 pm
Am saving up (slowly) for the GTI and waiting for insurance to run out before I do anything to mine.

How much have you spent on modding your car since you've bought it?

A scary question with an even scarier answer!

I'd rather not think about what I've spent, or for that matter what I'd like to spend  :jumping: :surprised:

Do you notice a pattern of behaviour forming here? - No-one knows exactly how much except that it's a lot and that it's so much it doesn't bear thinking about!!

I'm no different! It's an Obsessive Compulsive Disorder which is fed by this forum!

"Budgets"!!?? - WTF are those!?

    (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi22.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fb308%2FRedRobin_05%2FJesusSaysModify.jpg&hash=ff941dce9c73fffa1cafaaca1984ae15a2679abc)

Driving a well-balanced modified GTI is a quasi-religious experience of the highest order! It's beyond any calculation of something as mundane as cost!

There is a budget for each mod - you look in the bank and see if you can afford it.  Next mod pops in your head and you do the same thing  :rolleye:

1 rule, you dont ever add it up

Just some new wheels for me... Thinking of colour coding back bumper, thats about it..I always think about a remap for my golfs but never keep them to warrant it..I may ditch this for the new MKVI or one of those cheap R32,s so I dunno, mods seem to back off for me.

The cost of mine so far.

friends at work just laugh at me.  :signIWS:

friends at home smile at me as normal, but you can tell there thinking he is mad.  :chicken:

and the cost to my relationship with MRS Top cat, well every single mod brings fights, tantrums and toys all over the floor.  and thats just me.
But usually she just looks me right in the eye, and says Whyyyyyyy!

So the cost of this madness is expensive in all aspects.   :drinking:

I remember when I had my milltek fitted, week later my mate collected my old exhaust and brough it round - Mrs asked what it was - if she hadnt of seen I would have got away with it.

Overall I dont think she really minds ... well as long as she gets what she wants too!

I dont think I'm the first to use the point move method, can a PRADA handbag really cost £14.99?

I thought it was just me sneaking around and trying to hide the cost from my wife and also living in denial that this is a kind of addiction     In fact I was too embarressed to even mention it on here or golfgti.co.uk just in case you guys thought I was mad.  :signLOL:

I told my wife that my recent visits to JKM only cost £1200 - then it went up to £2000... problem is that I was out working in Hook and then driving to Hurdy's to pick up his Pescaras when she rang and told me that the bank statement had come through and was there anything I wanted to confess before I got an earfull  :chicken:  I feigned ignorance and said I don't know - and then she hit me with the bombshell - WHAT!  Over £5500 spent  :surprised:  and after she'd recovered, she said what time are you getting home as I want something from Blockbusters and Nandos so you can make it up to me  :scared:  I daren't tell her I was heading to Hurdy in Sheffield instead of Ipswich and wouldn't be back home until after 10pm.  I gave her 'the M25 is very very very busy' spiel.  Suffice to say I left Sheffield at around 8:30pm and got to Ipswich at 10:40pm  :driver:  Tested those mods out to the max on the way back        Have to say that I gained particular benefit from the Revo Stage 2 Remap and Bilstein Coliover mods than anything else on the way back

I reckon I've spent over £7k including the BBS CH alloys or almost £8k including Hurdy's Pescaras  :surprised: :surprised: :surprised: :surprised:

Still haven't learned though - I found myself thinking how I could get the LSD done in a couple of weeks when reading Red Robins write up on them... until I realised that I wouldn't have anything left AT ALL if I did that, not good, not good...  I might scour the garage to fund that purchase or wait till Feb - but that line in his post 'are you ready for your car to be transformed' really got me wanting an LSD RIGHT NOW!   :driver:

Only £400 eh Phil... well let me tell you your chain of thought as soon as that Milltek's on the car and you're driving home...

You'ill be thinking, I need the Hi-Flow Sports Cat to make the most of that Milltek Cat Back, and then you might as well take a look at the whole of the engine 'breathing' system to make sure their are no bottlenecks - otherwise, it would ruin the Miltek gains - so things like either Carbonio would have to be on the shopping list... or you could do it properly and get a real cold air intake like the EVOMS one... and after all that, you would have to get a remap to take full advantage of the bolt-on mods... Stage 1 Revo and circa 300bhp can't be sniffed at... oh hang on, Stage 2 is only £50 more so you might as well go the whole hog... and then you might need an aftermarket fuel pump then - what the hell... just chuck it in, you've come so far already - and of course, a Forge DV.  Then you'ill stand back and think..  :surprised:  hang on, what about the handling?!  Of course, you'ill have to go out and get Koni FSD/Eiback Springs - or expensive coilies - and the white line anti lift kit - a snitch at around an affordable £130 and maybe some anti-roll bars to round it all off.   Then you'ill look at your bank balance - hovering somewhere around 0 or some unmentionable negative number and truely understand the words of the wise elder Red Robin, who warned you that this is a slippery slope.

Oh.. but you'ill have a monster of a car that will blow your mind when you drive it - but only for a few days until you get used to it and bored.. and then the modding will start all over again - anyone for Stage 3 Revo and 450bhp?  :surprised:
