....
In view of what appears to have just happened to JPC re Ed30 seats, is it possible/practical for this forum to have a section which is strictly only viewable by members with more than say 200 posts? Some other car forums have such security for their meets posts.
-
Think it is a good idea - at least there is an area that could be used for more private, dare I say, intimate, discussions to take place :happy2:
-
....
I don't expect it's necessarily simple and would have to rely on people thinking about whether a new topic would be best as private.
For example, the OP of the 'neighbourhood breaker' thread would have to have realised a need for privacy.
Meets is an obvious candidate. Members Rides too, imo.
What does everyone else think and what does SteveP think is practical?
-
i think this comes close to having paid membership for upkeep of the forum..then only paid members benefit from discounts and news of breakers and such.
if its going to be 200 posts i better get posting!! haha
-
Maybes just simply a section where members with 200+ posts as you suggested (or whatever number is decided on) where anything like this can be discussed.. Any subject, just a general area but for established and more to the point trusted members only..
-
^^^^
200 posts was just to illustrate a principle and its not my decision. However, in my opinion it would need to be a fairly fat post count in order for the privacy to be effective.
-
i think this has fail written all over it tbh
i get what youre saying, and ideally would be great :happy2:
however, what of regular readers but infrequent posters? would limit their access but they would be no less a member?
would it not also create a core of 'inner members' posting potentially valuable info that people would miss if they dont get access? even if you duplicate it around the forums its a bit ott
i think the answer is simple.
if you are holding a hot potato then make a shout and then take it to private messages to spread the word
eg
if i knew of some recaro seats i could post about it, then tell people further info if they pm me
..i dont know of any btw but thats the simple fix
there is the option of closing areas for non registered members, but to do that widely would go against the site ethos? freedom to browse?
purely my opinion of course, but restrictions would be a knee jerk reaction

I feel like a sheep now.. But actually I totally agree with VC..
.. Bahhh

....Yes, any subject but in a general but secure private area. It would be incumbent on each of us not to abuse it and only start a topic there if privacy was indeed important either for the sake of the individual or for the sake of all.
:happy2:
-
....
Baaaaaah! Yes, I see VC's point too.
However, I don't see how it would adversely effect the site's 'ethos' as a whole. I can see SteveP posting a one word answer to this suggestion though.
-
I still think that even with 200+ posts you will still get some unscrupulous members on here. I have had dealings with a couple, both of whom are no longer members, but who had a lot of posts.
I don't think there is an easy way round this.
:scared:
-
would it not also create a core of 'inner members' posting potentially valuable info that people would miss if they dont get access?
....Thinking about this further, what's wrong with some info being more private? Why should a forum have to be totally open to every scumbag in the universe?
But I do think your post plus invitation to PM idea is excellent. :happy2:
-

:scared:
....Good point QD :happy2:
I'm just throwing in ideas to explore and discuss if something is practical. VC's idea is the best so far methinks.
-
Why should a forum have to be totally open to every scumbag in the universe?
its a public forum dude, on the world wide web?
if you were to close it to the public, membership would have to be by invitational only, you would have to impose a vetting system, add security protocols and protection.
= cost
also, would shrink the forum to a club not a 'community'
a case of it certainly aint broke so why fix it imho?
these things happen, not often but they do. and most members are aware of it hence why people blank their number plates in photos and dont hand over personal details in thread posts
maybe this is more a case of a bad business deal, a sour taste, and a nice concept to feel more secure
no disrespect meant :happy2:
just got my discussion hat on
-
Would it be simpler to have a choice when you start a topic, e.g. a tickbox, to make that particular topic only private to the members??
That solves the requirement instead of a whole section cordoned off as private...which I agree with VC would result in a 'inner core' of members, and a bad atmosphere.
Dunno..
-
i didnt realise this but you can view the whole forum logged in or not??
i thought areas like for sale and members rides would be only for members signed up and logged in to view.
-
I think its a bad idea full stop. What is there to say someone with a high post count would not cheat and lie, they could just be very good at it and never get caught.
There is no evidence that a member off here sneaked in or even a lurker seizing a opportunity did it. There has never been a incident like this since we came about. All we have is a man from the breakers yard making a statement.
Call me stupid but i would take the word of a member from here long before a man from a breakers who i havn't even said hello too.
Its just life i am afraid guys and the forum tootles along quite nicely without a private section for those who talk a lot. :happy2:
In my opinion of course. :popcornsoda:
-
I agree with the principles of this totally. I'm not to worried about the seats, what I would be more interested in doing is keeping vee double u uk out of the members ride! Lol
-
although an over 18's adult section would be quite cool
not talking rancid porn, but some of the riskier topics/pictures etc could always collect in an area like that?
VZi has the same system, anything a bit 'ya kno' gets tucked in there, only posters of 100 or more can get in
-
I agree an extra protected area would be useful for some things but if anyone wanted to, they could (via the courts) force SteveP to reveal all hidden info, so you'd still have to be careful about what you post.
Some of the areas can't be viewed when not logged in, which is fine for me.
Agree with the above comments that you could vet everyone into the 'inner sanctum' but still have a thief get through. Using a post limit isn't a silly idea as 200 posts is achievable if you post once in a while. But you have to address why you would want to do this and what it would achieve.
TBH I'd go for the 'PM me for details', baring in mind that DaveB didn't have even 100 posts so could easily be a scammer trying to build up some 'rep', in which case loads of people could have been duped.
As with everything in life, there's a certain element of risk that will always remain no matter how sensible you are.
-
Wise words MR Wolf.
-
Ok, a couple of points, a few of the sections of the site are not visible unless your registered (but as registration is very easy that does prevent people from joining just to check).
I agree with the words of VC and Stealth, if you have something that you don't want in the public domain don't post it in a forum. Simples
The last thing I want to do is create a multi tier site that will result in a "them" and "us" split.
As you were :happy2:

Great discussion :drinking: :grouphug:
There really isn't a perfect solution but I think VC's PM suggestion is the best if info needs to be networked privately.
That military guy which QD posted a pic of looks uncommonly like Hedge!

Is that a pic of your missus in your avatar, edd? Or is that private information?
^ Ooops! I missed the "mrs" after all the 6's and 9's. Nice looking missus anyway :happy2:

Would it be simpler to have a choice when you start a topic, e.g. a tickbox, to make that particular topic only private to the members??
I think that was sort of what Robin was seeking - and I reckon would actually be a good idea. But you'd then have to remember that a Mod or Admin could potentially untick said box too.
That solves the requirement instead of a whole section cordoned off as private...which I agree with VC would result in a 'inner core' of members, and a bad atmosphere.
Dunno..
I'm also 50:50 on having certain sections private - but many forums do. The GolfGTIforum has 'private' sections, and AudiSRS.com also has lots of sections which are private - but these are not restricted by post count - you just need to log in with a valid username - and they all become visible.
As others have said, it seems to be a knee-jerk reaction (and I don't mean that as a 'dig' at anyone) to what was probably a very rare one-off, but distasteful occurance. Not an easy job being a forum Admin.

....Sort of, but I wasn't seeking any method in particular but was just spontaneously (dangerous!) responding to what had happened and flagging the subject for discussion - Which is what's happened, we've had a healthy open discussion and hopefully this is good feedback for the Admin and Moderators to decide what they think is best.
Being spontaneous can be very dangerous! Yesterday a lady I don't know very well but have met, drove up alongside me at the traffic lights and wound down her window which resulted in me giving her my phone number. She called me last night and this afternoon's spontaneity resulted in me playing my flute in a public place with her dancing (she's a dancer) - All improvised. Those dancers do have very fine bodies, I couldn't help noticing. We both had to go our separate ways after an hour....I touched her arm and kissed her on the cheek and, to my surprise, walked away with a hard-on! She made sure I had her phone number so I guess I'm expected to call her. All of which is very much off topic.
-
The main ethos of the forum is to provide dedicated information on the Mk 5 platform to as many people who need it. This we feel should be either as a member or not, we are not about getting as many members as we possibly can because there is no gain in it for us, we dont get more from our sponsors and advertisers for better figures because we dont have any.
If people want to join in the fun then thats great if they just want to extract what they need then thats cool as well.
All the regular posters who become friends and see this as a bit of a place to hang out is just a by- product and although it is also important certainly for me its not the main consideration and we sometimes forget that its not.
I for one would not like to see any private sections available to members only, i feel this place works well on its current path.
And Robin this post is one of the funniest things i have ever read    :notworthy:

Robin your a gem!!
-
I realise why this thread has come about, but in the end it was a shifty ebay double deal by the seller rather than someone snooping and gazumping.
I agree with open and free, as there's already a facility to take anything sensitive offline in PMs.

Hello folks
Just thought id have my say on this. I 100% agree with VC (reply number 6). As you will see i have a very low post count and would be gutted if i wasnt able to see and more importantly benefit from the infomation that gets posted. I think Redrobin makes some good points and i understand he is only making suggestions but i dont think you will ever stop problems on public forums no matter what you do.
I know this sounds sad to some but i spend most nights trawling this site looking at members rides and laughing at the banter that goes on. If i couldnt do this id have to spend more time with the misses..
Oh and by the way im not 100% sure what happened to JPC but from what i read on this post it wasnt nice as this post wouldnt be here otherwise!!....Does that read right?

The whole flute thing reminded me of that scene from Anchorman when he takes the girl out for dinner and begins to serenade her with his 'Jazz Flute' hahahaha!!!
