I will get more pics up once i've had a good play around with all the controls and cleaned it of course. Considering i came from a mapped vRS this car is deceptively quick and still returns great MPG. I got 49.9MPG on the way back and that's without trying. The same Journey in the vRS sat at 70mph on cruise gave me 40.1mpg. The seats are far better than in the vRS (as you would expect in car like this) and with the added electric lumbar support they are very supportive whilst remaining comfortable.

I ummed and arred over leaving the VAG clan. But when i saw this car and test drove it i was sold and felt it too good an opportunity to let go.

Only one thing left to say now.....

I like it  :happy2:

Nice one Carl - I'm very sure you wouldn't have gone Merc without getting a solid deal and without certifying the way it drives. Rear drive after all  :driver: :rolleye:

Look forward to catching you drifting around roundabouts fully loaded with the family  :happy2: :happy2: :happy2:

(Need more pics too)

John - I'll be getting a Brabus map for it as it's backed by Mercedes so keeps the warranty.

It handles very well for a 1800kg car. It's nice to be able to put the power down too and not worry about modulating the pedal to control wheelspin. The sport mode is great too as it firms up the dampers, changes throttle response and shift point of the gears. On top of all that it's Man Wheel Drive too.

Will do a full review etc later.

Nice choice Carl :congrats:, my guess was close ... I was going to say the C350 CDI but didn't think they made that engine anymore. I considered the C350 myself before getting another Golf, they come quite well specced as standard and look great with the pano roof.

Interested to see what the Brabus tune gives.

Mandy. The Brabus tune will give it around an extra 50bhp and 70lbft. I could hold out and get a map done by a Mercedes specialist for about a 1/3 of the cost with a bit more. But I think I'd prefer to keep the warranty.

Good thing that Brabus maps keep the warranty. With 1800kg to push around everywhere it will need it.

It's because they are designed by Mercedes due to them owning Brabus. As said though it's no slouch in it's current guise. Not as quick as a mapped vRS but not far off and certainly better at launching.

Well today was quite a good day.

Got to the dealership at about 0915. After doing some mandatory paperwork and a quick check of my car they spent the next near 2hrs talking me through enough on the car to get me going (I'd still be there now if they went through everything) and answered any questions I had.

I then Sat in the car with one of the staff and she showed/talked me through setting up the seats, nav, mirrors etc and then came with me on a test drive to ensure I was happy with the cruise, gearbox modes and sport mode. Sport mode is brilliant you can really feel the difference in the car.

On return to the dealership I was presented with a brand new map disc set and a set of media interface cables as the originals were missing.
After a quick discussion about servicing plans etc I walked out the showroom having had the best handover of a car I've ever had. Even though this was a used approved car the sales team where only to happy to help with any query I had and made me feel like I was their only customer.

The salesman even wrote some questions in his diary to sort for me next week. Mainly about the Brabus map

The journey home was one of the nicest drives I've had in a while. Everything was effortless and silky smooth. Even the Mrs commented on just how smooth it was when she drove it.

I'm not for one minute suggesting my vRS was bad nor am I now a badge snob. The vRS gave me 3 happy years motoring and the one before it gave me 4. I just wanted to try something different. I wanted diseasel due to distance from family and I wanted power and comfort. That only really left me with one of the big 3 German makers and this car was just too good to let go.

Storage wise it's a bit smaller than the vRS in boot space. But I rarely fill it now and I have a roof box.

The only other thing to mention at the moment is the stereo. It's foooking epic. The sound is amazing, as expected from Harman Kardon.

All in all in the short time I've had it the car has impressed me an awful lot and more than I anticipated.

Hi Carl

Rocking an E250 Coupe at the moment on a stupid stupid cheap contract hire deal, can only back you up on everything you've said...everything feels stupidly well built, mine goes back in a year and I'm really hoping that getting back into a VAG won't be quite as disappointing as I expect it to...

As long as you don't opt for a entry level engine, they do indeed pile the spec on...its not uncommon depending on the desired spec to in essence get the next engine up for practically nothing, my four cylinder is only 212BHP but feels like it would pull the side of your house off, that 6 potter in a C Class must feel very good indeed.

You really feel it on longer journeys, I'm regularly doing Preston Stansted and it seems to take half as long in my head....The seats are particularly good, they feel really firm initially but you have so much adjustment available back pain (which I suffer from) is a thing of the past, I've got orthopaedic sports seats and its awesome

Thanks Dave.  :happy2:

Yup it certainly is a cracking engine and it just feels so effortless. I haven't been out in it today as I've had to help pack for our holiday  I took less kit away on tour for 7.5months than we are for 3 weeks

But i am itching to get out in it again and looking forwards to drive into Europe this week.

I need to chat to you about Brakes anyhow but i'll send you a PM if that's ok?

Title: Re:
Post by: vRS Carl on June 02, 2014, 08:00:06 pm
It's only with the Brabus one though. It's just a fancy tuning box to be honest but it plugs into the ecu and gearbox ecu and has to be done by a Mercedes dealer to keep the warranty. If you fit it yourself then there's no warranty.

Hi Carl
Very smart & in the best colour too! My brother has a slightly lesser specced non AMG and that goes very well indeed. His wife has kerbed a wheel which I kind of expected tbh but last week she took out the entire near side on a low post. Bro is pretty cross!
Enjoy and safe driving.

Not too shabby for a 1800kg wood burning stove

Standard car is 6.5secs

First attempt with the Tuning box fitted

That's impressive!

I know nothing about these tuning boxes compared with conventional brand name after market remaps, but on the surface that looks like a quick and cost effective way of software tuning. In my mind I'd always associated tuning boxes with eBay risk filled buys, but clearly can't be the case anymore if someone like yourself is putting them in your new 35k+ Benz  :happy2:

Are you still bothering with the Brabus map in the long run Carlos?
Title: Re:
Post by: vRS Carl on July 01, 2014, 01:32:24 pm
No as the Brabus is not a map but a tuning box which costs 6 times as much as the DTUK one

It also has to be fitted by a Brabus approved dealer (Not just any Mercedes dealer) for the warranty to be approved. So all in all I'm paying £1500+ for an extra warranty.

Tuning boxes have come on leaps and bounds these days. The one I'm using is a multichannel box which alters fueling and boost signals. It also comes with a 3yr warranty and I can take it to my next car as they just reprogram it for whatever you get next.

Where does it plug into?
Title: Re:
Post by: vRS Carl on July 01, 2014, 02:22:35 pm
It plugs into the rail and boost pressure sensors.
Title: Re: vRS Carl's New Machine ***Pics Added***
Post by: rdfcpete on July 01, 2014, 03:58:22 pm
^ Cool.

No ODB or port interaction?
Is the reprogram free?
Title: Re:
Post by: vRS Carl on July 01, 2014, 05:01:26 pm
No it's all done in the engine. The reprogram is an additional cost but it's about a third of the cost of a new box. They will also offer you a new box at trade price if your current one doesn't fit your new car due to technical changes etc.
Title: Re: vRS Carl's New Machine ***Pics Added***
Post by: rdfcpete on July 01, 2014, 05:08:31 pm
Directly to the engine? Interesting.

The prices seem fair. In terms of a gains and cost combination, is this now known as the best way to tune a vehicle like yours from an enthusiasts POV?
Title: Re:
Post by: vRS Carl on July 01, 2014, 05:31:11 pm
It plugs into the fuel rail sensor at the back of the engine and then the boost pressure sensor at the front of the engine (on mine anyway. Location will be different on other engines).

The loom then connects to the Tuning box which intercepts the signal to the ECU and alters the boost and fuelling accordingly. So similar to a remap (before people start the remap vs tuning box argument I know there is a lot more involved in a map!)

The difference with this is its easy to remove yourself. A remap you can't.

To be honest it has surprised me at how good it is. There are 28 different settings on this particular box (4 different maps with 7 power setting adjustments for each map). Yes a remap would yield slightly better results on a Dyno and be less "crude"  in how it achieves those results.

But for something that takes 15 mins to fit and remove it's a no brainer.

As for the best way then that would still be a remap. There is a company called GAD Tuning that have tuned a C350 CDI to 340bhp and 800lbft!!! That's with remap,  EGR switched off , DPF Delete and a larger bore TBE.

Mine now has around an extra 40bhp and 80lbft. Which I'm happy with as I just wanted a bit more shove. I don't intend doing anything else after I've found some better air filters (which is proving difficult at the moment)

^  :happy2: Very cool.

EGR off, rather than EGR delete? Nice. Another software advantage I guess.

Will you DPF delete eventually? Does seem to expose a lovely deep V6/6 cylinder rumble on the 3.0 diesel Mercs/BMWs/Audis etc combined with a TBE.

Yes the EGR can be switched off on the Mercedes Diseasel.

No i won't be removing the DPF. With the MOT regs changing all the time and the current ones checking DPF's it's safer to just leave it on and saves me a few quid.

The engine actually sounds quite nice on WOT for a wood burner

:signLOL:    Not your first TDI though is it? I forget now.

Makes sense - that's my concern too with DPF Del. The legality and insurance situation. Not sure if gutting the insides and leaving the box as it is leaves you any better off, in theory(?). The sound, performance and economy gains from doing it are mega tempting  :sad1:

6pot diesels generally sound very smooth. I'd pay good cash to have the 3.0 V6 245ps VAG engine in my A3  :fighting:

I had a PD140 Diseasel Octavia Estate for a while.  :happy2:

A 245PS Diseasel A3 would be interesting  :driver:

Went and got rid of a few seagull bombs and then took some pics after cleaning it the other day. I ran a quick detailer over it to get rid of a few rain marks and wipe marks from removing the seagull bombs.
