Title: Reverse Camera via Number Plate
Post by: davmar00 on June 04, 2014, 01:17:52 pm
Hi Guys,

I've just joined this forum as I thought it may be a good place to get some help fitting a new reverse camera that I've just brought. I have a MK5 1.9 TDI Sport and have fitted the following head unit which I can't recommend  highly enough for the money if anybody's in the market for one...http://www.preston-i-c-e.co.uk/vw-002-android.php

This is the camera I've brought (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400717321615?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT) which replaces one of the number plate lights. I'm told the number plates run on CAMBUS though (or however you spell it) and so replacing them could give me an error message. I have no VAG-COM and so clearing these things are a pain hence trying to avoid if poss! I'm also told that using the reverse lights to power the cam and the light feature will give a distorted image.

Can anybody offer any advise on how to install this as whilst I can cope fine with head units etc, these are a new world for me!

Thanks in advance if anybody has any suggestions and happy to share anything I know elsewhere on the forums or indeed if anybody fancies one of these head units. Fitting them is a peice of cake when you know how!

Mark :-)

I have a jvc head unit and the picture is amazing, bit worrying when reversing up to another car, it looks like you are going under it.

I've done this with the kenwood dnx520vbt. Bought a number plate light of eBay for £25, the kenwood has the Rcam input so as soon as u activate reverse the canbus recognises it and flicks it on. Got no error from the new number plate light so it would seem that the number plate lights don't give off a bulb error! Was a nightmare feeding the cables and we took a power feed from the 12v socket. Great picture and well worth it!

don't think the cheap one will because of the connectors. this one will but a massive price difference

Thanks, I thought that may be the case - thanks for the link, at that price I think I'll keep an eye out for a second hand RVC badge in the for sale section

My thoughts exactly, it's not much more for a way better unit
