Title: Golf GT Tdi 2004 broken down
Post by: chakatee on June 08, 2014, 10:39:53 pm
Hi,

Hope someone can help.

Golf MK5 GT Tdi 2004.

Tonight, I was driving my Golf and on a straight bit of road accelerated quickly. Once reaching around 50-60mph, heard a very loud bang (may have been from left-hand side). The car then lost acceleration and I stopped at a set of traffic lights with the engine ticking over. The car was spluttering for the next 20 yards with hardly any acceleration at all. There was a lot of smoke from the rear. There are no engine management lights on. I switched the engine off then on again. There was a brief, unusual smell inside the car when I started revving the car. The engine splutters badly and the rev counter is erratic, not reaching very high revs.
The car idles as it did before the loud bang.
I called the RAC and the mechanic noticed that the mass air flow hose and loose and virtually detached. He re-secured this but no improvement when the accelerator pedal was pressed - still the very bad misfiring and awful revs.

The car has been re-mapped in the past - around 4 years ago.
The car has experienced some lumpy idling/slight misfire in recent past which improved after regular use of Shell V-Power Nitro.
The car has had a replacement turbo in the past about 3 years ago (by Awesome Gti). At lot of other work was done at the same time.

The car is no longer drivable and has been towed to a nearby garage.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Sorry if it's a stupid question but have you checked the charge pipe or (can't remember the correct names for them) inter cooler pipes haven't come popped off?

No, haven't checked intercooler pipes. It went straight to the garage. I'm just worried it's going to coast an arm and a leg to fix. It couldn't have happened at a worse time :(

Just out of interest - did the garage manage to sort fix the car?
