I had my new wheels fitted yesterday, extremely happy :)
they were a custom order from japan. Excuse the crappy carpark iPhone pics, but my jaw dropped when I pulled up and I just had to snap a few off.
Definitely worth the wait in my opinion. :)
posting from my phone, so I'll keep it short.

They look excellent. Hope you put Pirelli tyres on them though!!!! :P

....
Very nice - I love the Titanium finishes - The best of both worlds being neither too bright nor too dark.
Naturally I'm curious what these weigh. IIRC your previous wheels were lightweight (in your current sig pic).
:happy2:

Tinto - I think we're the only two here with Blue Graphite GTi's... whey hey. Like the alloys... Do you have the original rims, and are they up for grabs - I'd be interested?

I do like the look of these actually Steve, quite common on a few Jap drift cars I have seen. Wondering what the weight of each wheel is....
-
mojo - yep - they've been cleaned/ waxed and going to be stored in the shed for if/when I sell the car.
I think it would be harder to move a Pirelli without the most overt external signs that it is a legit one.
I considered this wheel an OEM replacement, so wasn't chasing super lightweight numbers, but rather good looks and decent girth :P
Seeing them used/abused by drifters helped a lot with this. I also saw the colourway working nicely together without being as brash as gold or as dark as gunmetal can be.
I had 12.5kg in my mind to beat, as this was the weight of the 17" classix on my older GT Sport TSI.
So while these are lighter than those GT wheels, it is not by much - coming in at 11.8kg for the one I weight on my bathroom scales (not a particularly accurate device, but they're digital and seem pretty accurate).
The alarming thing... I put a Pirelli wheel on there, expecting mid 12s at least... one 18x7.5 was 11.4kg!
Which does make sense - two less spokes and an inch less width - but wow! those wheels are pretty light for standard OEM.
So if anything - I've got an overall GAIN of 400g/corner for an extra inch of width and 5mm of sweet arch-filling offset.
Someone can do the boffin-style unsprung-weight-rotating-mass-mathematics and tell me it is actually more than that, but I don't really want to hear it ;)
RR - My race wheels - the ones in my sig - are lightweight 17x8 wheels, but I wouldn't run those on the road.
They are 7.7kg/corner with R spec rubber on them.
I have no regrets, I think the work XT7s look great, and sure I'd like them to be lighter... but overall just I love looking at my car now :)
Cost was around $2k AUD for the wheels (around 1100 pounds), add on another $700 AUD or so as they were air shipped individually (creative accounting).
I'm sure you could get the shipping cost down more if you were willing to wait for the slow boat to cross the pond from Japan.
But they took about 4-5 weeks to make, so I was done waiting and wanted them on a plane!
-
No probs, Tinto... I do like the rims...

OMG i really do like them, much better pics to really show off the rims. :happy2:
-
Thanks guys I'm very happy with em.
It is starting to warm up down here (had to take all these pics in the shade) so an order for the apr intercooler and hpfp is going in this week.
The ap racing 6 pots (bought from dubtek on here) will look good behind the works too!
A ceramic coated 42 draft downpipe is sitting at the end of my bed waiting to be slotted in as well.
Show and go :)
-
Those wheels are stunning mate.

(I'm reposting this from my post on Golfmkv.com - didn't want to just link it up)
The thing is bonkers now. (Old pics used, as it looks exactly the same from the outside.)

Today I stepped things up a bit.
- APR HPFP
- APR Intercooler
- APR Stage 2+ K04 tune
- 42 Draft Ceramic coated 3" street series downpipe (resonated) mated to stock cat back (from NA Motorsports).
Everything was installed by Quattro Motors in Burswood, WA.
The low end still feels good and still drives perfectly smooth, the only giveaway are some new spooling/turbo wastegate sounds. Drive-wise, it is hard to tell it apart form stock in this respect.
Perfect for a daily driver as the overall exhaust note is stock. You've got to be pressing on for it to make any sort of noise beyond normal - which is exactly what I was chasing from my daily driver.
But now if I pop it into S mode or manual mode and get it fizzing... it is incredibly responsive and completely f*cking manic.
As with any GTI, you need to wait until you're rolling to feed in the power. Feed it in fairly swiftly and and you're pinned to your seat and hurled down the road - it is a significant step up.
Traction with the Pirellis and KW V3 coilovers is consistently good - there's some wheelspin but no hollering from the tyres - a slight squirm before they hook up - hard.
It is a bit of sensory overload right now - no doubt I'll get used to it soon and have a bit more clarity
Pop the bonnet or look/listen to the exhaust from the rear and it all appears completely stock. Lovely.
We're in for a stinking summer, so I opted for two things that should keep temps down under my bonnet - an intercooler and ceramic coated downpipe.
Needless to say when pressing on you find yourself approaching the ...uhm.... speed limit rather rapidly, and needing to brake HARD to ensure you don't ... exceed it at all.
Fortunately, there's a set of these sitting under the endboard in my bedroom:

Which will be fitted sooner rather than later!
You are reading the post of a very happy (if considerably poorer) man.
-
Wow! :notworthy:
Looks superb and sounds as though she goes well too! Get them brakes on ASAP! :driver:
-
superb dude :happy2:
who needs to sit forward in their seat anyway
-
....
Nice one, tinto! :notworthy:
I must say that your car's colour looks superb when it's shiny.
Am I right in thinking that modding is heavily frowned upon by the authorities in your neck of the woods? Hence your mission to look oem.
-
echo the comments :congrats:
the stance is just
-
Superb one of my favs just got even better. :congrats:
-
wow thats sounds impressive tinto! :jumping:
so do you have CAI then as it looks standard when you pop the bonnet??
i better get saving!! :chicken:
-
Great transformation - and write up! :popcornsoda:
-
Thanks guys - pretty happy!

Its more that the car is only 4000km old, I didn't feel like doing too many mods that I couldn't just unbolt :)
I'm also not an enormously extroverted guy (until i'm drunk haha), so tend to go for stuff that matches me as a person.
Car being an extension of your "being" (you know which part) and all that.
I like the way the stock bay looks with the engine cover in place. I know you can't see it, but it is satisfying for me to know it is all basically standard looking.
I also really like that APR don't force you to buy an intake to go to stage 2+, which (although you'll get gains from that) means you can keep the quiet/stock airbox up front but still have plenty of performance.
The fact you don't have to buy an intake also cancels out some of the premium you pay for APR gear.
I tend to like a drop and good wheels on these cars - some have much more done to them very very well, but there's something about the OEM + tweaked look that appeals to me. Moreso on a limited model like this one.
I'd like to say it was a sleeper, but the stance kind of gives things away :)
-
I bet she goes like stink now :surprised:

....Ooops! If a car is an extension of your "being", then I shudder to think what that says about me. But actually I don't give a damn! I am what I am.
The modern car is really an equivalent of a chariot or fine horse in earlier times. Whether we like it or not it does reflect something about its owner and is a form of self-expression. I better not expand on this subject without donning my flame-proof suit.
Respect! Very tastefully modded car :notworthy:
