Right guys, i've tried searching for the answer to my questions, but only found little bits of the puzzle and i can't piece them together!
Currently i have the RCD300 with the 6 CD changer in the armrest. I'd like to have a setup where i can connect my iphone up so it charges, but also allows me to play the music on there. I'd also like to have the phone somewhere visible as i use it as a satnav! What are my options, and what equipment would i need?
I know a lot of people change the HU to the RCD510, but i have no idea what else they do. Are aftermarket HU another option or not?
EDIT: My car is a 06 plate Golf gti DSG if that is any help.
Josh.

lots of options Josh
depends how much you want to spend, you could get an Rcd310 but would need a new canbus. then add an MDI kit

It really comes down to what demon666 said. You could get an rcd510 which come in multiple versions. The Delphi usb version (~100 GBP) that comes with an integrated media player offers iPhone/iPod capability and charging without any extras except 2 cables (rcd to usb female + usb male to iPhone which you prolly already have). You can run the cable through the glove box or air vent depending on where you mount the phone. Or you could get the oem USB switch that goes in the ESP button area. You would be losing RDS functionality though with this version and also no DAB. On the upside the interface allows you to change tracks through the RCD and also use MFSW controls which should be safer.
You'll need to update the CAN gateway with any of the newer OEM headunits (310/510 units), including the delphi unit. Eddie-NL has precoded gateways. You'll also need an AM/FM adapter adapter cable for newer OEM units [ebay]251287614893[/ebay].
In any other scenario you'll need an MDI kit + OEM HU (~200-300 GBP).
Aftermarket units shouldn't need a CAN upgrade. I've also seen an aftermarket media player that may connect to your current rcd300 and would be the cheapest solution but i'm not sure about its functionality.

Thanks for the reply guys! i'll have a look at getting the RCD510 and the other part for it. It sounds like the best option (maybe not the cheapest though) as it will do everything i want, and looks much nicer in the car than an aftermarket HU would
