Title: New member with a black golf gti dsg
Post by: B6NVW on June 18, 2014, 03:58:34 pm
Hi guys, my names Ben. New on here!

Picked my golf up on Monday and loving every second of it so far. Not new to golfs but new to the mk5.

I've been looking for a while to try and find one with the right spec, leather because of the kids and xenons for me were a must!

Managed to get one with heated leather, xenons, satnav, steering wheel controls, parking sensors and 18" monzas - not diamond cut though unfortunately.

Anyway here it was the day I got it

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fbendavies780%2FMobile_Uploads%2FIMG_20140616_165148_zps9lqmklog.jpg&hash=f9d96e428371093ef62afc36ea5095816b702f37)

Although the paintwork was in fairly good condition I wasnt 100% happy with it so cracked open the DA and took a trip to halfords to stock up.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fbendavies780%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20140618_113242_zpsjk0kyypf.jpg&hash=c2c408eee93db323e9e0ebe807a77c4e842f5fa0)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fbendavies780%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20140617_203619_zpsheecod5o.jpg&hash=dde2eb7ecc210adb2947d2d49fe647a5ac53f85d)

I could tell the paintwork had been looked after well and polished regularly as soon as I got the hose on it so I decided to get the meguires claybar kit out and strip it all back. This made so much difference and showed up about 1000 more scratches!

So heres a quick shot after a clay and polish with the menzerna and DA.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fbendavies780%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20140617_143618_zpsukubulbo.jpg&hash=c322cbb2f3e8228996147049d5bf54b10bab3e1c)

Then that was that for yesterday.

This morning I decided to give it a quick was again just with water to remove the dust that had settled overnight and then got the autoglym super resin polish on top.

Left the paintwork at that and here it is now.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fbendavies780%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20140618_121011_zpsp1abk9ql.jpg&hash=dd2de59d45c31a9064e387af166ff7c8f534c1d8)

That was it for the outside for now, ill be giving it a coat of g3 wax at the weekend after another wash.

Started on the inside, really pleased with the  only needed a quick hoover and going over the dash and dials with meguires interior detailer -really good stuff!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fbendavies780%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20140618_132021_zpstpr6ma0j.jpg&hash=18772a0f070cb3eede7898c6432ac75ce3f29b6f)

Theres a couple of bits I need to get tidied up, so my list of things to do is

New oil filler cap
New intake pipe
New exhaust tips

And this is why
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fbendavies780%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20140618_133239_zpsq8w0fajy.jpg&hash=55eaaa48c8c1355f3316aea97d3a6169f9b9f25a)

Forgot to say this car has also been remapped but its just a generic one so will be getting it checked out and a proper map put on once funds allow. As well as getting it into the bodyshop for rear bumper, skirts and splitter to be colour coded.

Oh and a wheel refurb in there somewhere!

Thanks man,

Not really atm other than mentioned. Just want to start by tidying up and trying to make it mind.

The exhaust tips are really past it now so I want to get that sorted. But also dont want to buy a complete system so im think im getting some nice ed30 tips welded on instead.

Then onto the bodywork. Still wondering why vw didn't colour code the skirts and front and rear splitters!

Thanks man, all you need is some time, patience and the right products. Im sure you could achieve this finish by hand with a little more time and effort if you dont have a DA

Im a total noob when it comes to car cleaning. Gradually building up my supply of products, would love a DA, but nervous, lve heard they can do more harm than good if you dont know what youre doing.

Yeah I was the same at first, tested it on my girlfriends mini first haha.

Seriously though you cant go wrong with this, also has adjustable speed so you can start it slow and build up speed as you get more confident

So im a week into ownership and still loving it as much as the day I got it if not more. I went for my first spirited drive last night, with the car in manual using the paddles on the steering wheel. Really is an awesome bit of kit.

Also.. could not believe how well this thing goes round corners!

Another quick wash today (making the most of my time off work) and we went to alton towers a few days ago so the car was a dusty, fly splattered mess.

Spent some time on the exhaust, still not perfect but at least I can tell its there now. Nothing worse than dirty tips

Looks really nice mate  :congrats: IMO the inners on your wheels need to be painted a darker colour, just to set the wheels of a bit

Thanks mate, not sure what to do with wheels, they need a refurb but also want to get some diamond cut ones. Looks so much better imo.

Pretty happy with 36mpg too!! Does this sound about right obviously motorway driving, mixed speeds due to traffic and no cruise control as it doesnt seem to be working?
Title: Re: New member with a black golf gti dsg
Post by: Hurdy on June 25, 2014, 09:49:04 pm
36 mpg on a steady cruise isn't too bad for a GTI. I have seen higher, but it is in the ballpark.

OCD cleaning tendencies are a must with a black VW.  :happy2:

Post by: J400uk on June 25, 2014, 10:43:12 pm
Yeah 36mpg sounds about right to me for a long run. You can touch 40mpg but mid 30s would be about average for motorway journeys. Cruise control helps and its not unknown for the original stalks to fail so that might be worth replacing.

Back to work on monday so today I went to my local vw and had some new number plates made up for my private reg.

Followed by a trip to the post office to spend 265 on a little bit of paper that goes in the corner of my windscreen  :sad1:

Yeah mine looked a mess, didn't think they would be recoverable but not actually too bad. Going to get a mix of grades of wire wool and some autolsol today and see if I can get them any better

Didnt get chance to use the wax as it got too hot.

Still need to get some new brakes and still indecided what discs and pads to go for on the standard calipers.

Been busy working so haven't had chance to play with the car much, or even drive it!

Gave it a good machine polish and wax last weekend and came up a treat, getting more confident with the DA now.

Heres an arty pic, also sprayed the badge black.

First proper long journey in the golf, 380 miles to be precise and i even managed all of that on 1 tank of fuel which i was very pleased with! The fuel light literally came on as i turned onto my estate.

Absolutely filthy when i got back, covered in seagull sh*t and salty sea air so gave it a good clean and fitted my new smd led interior bulbs. Got a kit from ebay for 20quid and really pleased with the outcome.

Heres some pics
