Title: Rough start up first thing/loosing oil
Post by: No1gooner on June 22, 2014, 12:07:26 pm
Hi all
Just need to see if anyone knows what's up with my mk5 gti, I took it to VW yesterday for service and mentions that my car is rough to start after being idle for a while (overnight) and after that first initial start up its fine, they ran a diagnostic test and it came back fine no faults but mentions that I was low on oil which could be the cause, I went on to explain that I always keep the oil topped up and and only done it two weeks prior, he said that his checked for leaks and couldn't fine none in which I said I've also seen no leakage, he asked me to record my mileage and keep checking my oil over a four week period and record the results and if there is no improvement with the car rough starting when it's first started and my oil is still going too fast to take the car back for further inspection, just wondering if anyone here has had this or a similar problem and what it could be and also where I'm losing all that oil in such a short period
Thanks any help appreciated :happy2:

It's very common for these engines to be a little rough to start.

Could be the wrong or dying battery, carbon build up on the inlet valves or the fuel system taking a few cranks to get enough pressure. It's nothing to worry about, as long as the car always starts  :happy2:

Have a read of this:

If it's losing oil, perhaps the PCV is kaput? See the "how to" thread for more info.

Worth keeping an eye on the oil consumption if it's more than 1 litre every 1000 miles then something is wrong

Hi, just replaced an injector on mine to Rectify a judder on idle and starting issue from cold and when had been left to stand. Also cleaned the inlet valves as had a excess build up of carbon which is a common fault on these engines as mentioned. No faults were stored I just checked mvb's 15 and found a sporadic misfire on cylinder 3, did all the relevant checks which indicated a faulty injector.  Could be a  possible cause as well as Pcv valve on its way out!!

Thanks for the info I'm going to monitor the oil levels over the next four weeks reckon I would of done about 200 miles give or take by then and see what happens, if all is not well I'll mention these suggestions to the dealer and see what he thinks so thanks for giving me something to go on if I need too cheers guys  :happy2:
