Title: Newbie! Golf MKV 1.9tdi
Post by: lilsmoke21 on June 23, 2014, 01:36:02 pm
Recently purchased a MK5 1.9 Tdi which is something I've been meaning to do for a while. I live in Shropshire about 10 miles from Shrewsbury

Got it at a decent price but needs a bit of love.

Not looking to do any major upgrades but want to upgrade the head unit and speakers to something with Sat nav and preferably aux or some way of playing music from my phone. Any recommendations

Also looking for a decent place to refurb/spray my monza alloys as they have the dreaded white worm quite bad any advice on what the best option would be!

I'm new to forums and slowly getting to grips with it all! I'm also just starting to buy products for detailing so any advice on that would be great to!

Welcome mate, plenty of different headunits with aux or bluetooth to play music via your phone & fair few how to guides on refurbing Monza's. Get some pictures up too. :happy2:

Is it best to just go for the standard rcd rns or are the other brands better value?

I've seen a few of the threads on the monza refurbs I do intend to just want to be able to commit the time properly!

Cheers for the reply

Depends if you wanna keep it OEM mate? If so I would go for the RNS510 and refurbing your Monzas will take some time so make sure you've got a day to yourself.

I've had a look at the RNS510 but I've read about the battery drain issue and sounds complex to sort it out and I don't have VAGCOM yer that's the plan take a bit of time off to do it!

Cheers! I've seen the kenwood there was a lad selling one for 450 and I was very tempted, a lot of people seem to go for the OEM and that was the only reason I didn't but given I am useless with cars the lack of needing to do anything is tempting!

I've got an Sony XAV-601BT.

Most important feature to look for in a head unit is usability/user interface. You're gonna be using the thing everyday.
It's got some chunky icons easy to tap while driving (or iphone like grid styled ones)

The Sony's decent for my needs:
got Bluetooth
AUX,
2x usb ports,
iPod (by the USB cable) support
A/v input (if you want to install a rear cam/ps2 etc),
plays DVDs too as well as mp3s
MP4 video files off the USB stick also.

If you got an android/galaxy s3 - you can mirror your phones screen and touch it through the HU, too unusable while driving tbh.
No Satnav, unless you fork out for the TomTom kit.

Sound output is quality, all depends on the source/bitrate of the track though.
Best part about the HU I found was 'Rear Bass Enhancer', basically turns your back speakers into subwoofers by only passing low frequency sounds.

I paid around £210 off ebay, suspect they'll be going for less now.

Literally did the install myself. Had to by a few leads off ebay too, and just followed tutorials on this forum. You wont find it too difficult  :happy2:
