Title: Exhaust replacement for Mk5 GTI
Post by: Bennz on June 26, 2014, 11:51:25 pm
Thinking to replace the OEM exhaust ( muffler and tailpipes) to give the car a bit of more sportier sound .
I'm after a low and deep tone than a loud and raspy sound.

What you guys recommend ?

I have just had the back box cut off and a pipe welded in place with twin tips on it so it looks like the original finish.
Makes a lovely noise now and not too loud.
Cost was £140 from my local exhaust fabricators.

3" down pipe and 200 cel sports cat :happy2: also this would unleash some extra horses as the main restriction with the standard system is held hear.. The it would be up to you what you want to do with the back section  could just do what biscuit has done with a replacement pipe and some nice sinew shines tips?

I know you are saying you like it, i did the same back in the day and it only lasts a few weeks until you realise it actually sounds a bit cheap and too raspy.

Plus £140 for cutting out a box and re-welding a pipe there is hell expensive. I had min done and TIG welded for £60. That guys had your pants down  :booty:

Moral of the story: Buy once, get a great exhaust

Iv got a miltek cat back non res and sounds perfect not loud until you put foot down but even then it's not intrusive! Best thing on motorway, no drone!

Ps might be looking at moving to r32 rear end so might be up for sale soon!

That's a very helpful response!!!!!!

To the OP,
I just looked on YouTube at a few options. If you type in ( mk5 golf gti back box delete ) that will give you a bit of an idea as to what it sounds like.
It's not to everyone's tastes but I have just come from an E46 M3 with straight pipes so I think the golf is very quiet in comparison.
