Title: Any MOT testers on those in the know about?
Post by: chowgar on July 04, 2014, 02:38:41 pm

Just had the girl in for her MOT and went through with flying colours but then failed as the front plate is on magnets and may fall off....  :scared:

these are the usual mags that everone uses that to be honest you don't want your fingers in the way if playing with them...

any advice?

Just read the MOT check lists and no where does it say how the number plate has to be attached. ONLY talked about number plate lights.

I dont think they can fail you for it, only give you an advisory

My bad re searched the document for registration plate:

 A registration plate:
a. missing or incorrect
b. so insecure that it is likely to fall off
c. letter or figure missing or incomplete
d. faded, dirty, delaminated, deteriorated or
obscured, (for example by a towbar) so
that it is likely to be misread or is not easily
legible by a person standing approximately
20 metres to the front/rear of the vehicle

Id take the car elsewhere.

You can appeal to VOSA as well?

A good argument could be made around what the definition of "so insecure that it is likely to fall off", and what was the intention of VOSA with regards to how the wanted this rule to applied. I suspect it isn't meant for cases like your Chowgar!

got down there and the guy I was dealing with had a chat with the inspector offered to fix double sided tape to the reg and surround... maybe he realized what an  :booty: he was being and wrote it off and passed it...

might be worth others taking it into account though just in case...

and after all that.... done dusted for another year but nearly £400 lighter

Thanks for all the advice though guys....

I'm an mot tester the number plates have to be secure to pass an mot.

I have magnets on my front plate on my gti it's stayed on for over a year so I'd say they are pretty secure lol (unless someone decides to take it off and steal it)

Glad you got it sorted
