Title: 5w40 quantum platinum oil for short distances
Post by: mrggg on July 06, 2014, 02:02:04 am
Hi, I want to use the 5w30 long life oil but dealers I have spoken to insist on using the 5w40. The car is used basically as a family used car, so it gets driven short distances within town and on weekends it is usually taken on dual carriages/ motorways and mileage wise the it does about 6-8k per annum.

So do you think I should just go with what the dealer says and using 5w40 or perhaps buying my own 5w30 quantum oil and providing them with this, I hope they dont get annoyed about it though

I want to know the answer too . Thinking between Castrol edge titanium 5w30 or shell helix ultra 5w40

I personally only use 5w-30, especially as your car is regularly used on a variety of roads it should be fine. If you give it to a dealer, ask for the bottle back to check they've used it.

What 5w30 you use? Would 40 not have proper viscosity to lubricate fast at higher load?

I use any top brand, mostly Castrol or Shell. I try go fully synthetic now as well.

In short, the UK is a moderate climate, so we're better with oil suitable for cold/moderate weather (5w-30). I think that 5w-40 is just a bit too thick for stock turbo petrol engines, but the difference is probably so small its not worth the worry.
