Hey guys,
So I've just bought a 2006 GTI so am in the process of getting all servicing up to date, this includes the timing belt.
I've narrowed the kits down to 2:
http://www.europaparts.com/timing-belt-kit-2-0t-bpy.html (http://www.europaparts.com/timing-belt-kit-2-0t-bpy.html)
http://www.blauparts.com/proddetail.asp?prod=GH21130-C (http://www.blauparts.com/proddetail.asp?prod=GH21130-C)
Blauparts is cheaper but I've never heard of the brand INA before, can anyone tell me if this is a reputable brand? I'm leaning toward the europa kit as is seems to have the better brands.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

INA is an extremely reputable company, they do a lot of OEM stuff for ze Germans.
OEM prices
06F 198 119 A - Cam belt kit retails at £150
Hope this helps :happy2:

Awesome thanks! These kits are half the price buying locally in New Zealand.
The US has BPY engines but mine is a BWA, from what I can tell these engines are basically the same? So the parts should fit.

The OEM is half price in NZ??? I'm planning to get one for my Car with BWA engine too.

Yep, local garage was going to be ~$1000NZD vs about $450NZD importing from the USA.

Oh right . I thought you means in NZ was half price than the US. I'm in NZ too and found local prices way too high . Going to order some parts including cambelt either from Ecstuning or vwgeniuneparts.co.uk

Actually a Q for you all : in the user manual for GTI it only mentions to change the timing belt at 180,000 KMs there is no mention of number of years. Where do you guy get 6 or 4 years from ? My car is 6 years old and at 30,000KMs only

Its whatever occures first Mate. 4 years or mileage. Good luck with your timing belt when it goes bang due not beign replaced for a fraction of price of engine repair bill. :signLOL:
Also Dayco and Gates are probably leading brands as well..
-
I reckon I'll go for the Blaupart kits as it's a little cheaper and under the threshold for New Zealand import tax (saves me over $100NZD)
Thanks guys.

Have you guys changed the thermostat when changing waterpump too ? Or it doesn't need to be replaced ? Is it close to waterpump assembly ?

I'm getting is changed because it comes with the kit (and it seems like a pita to change)
Is it worth getting the accessory belt tensioner changed while getting all the rest done?
-
What kit is that ? I'm looking at the kit by Ecstuning and it has accessory belt and water pump with metal impeller but not thermostat. Although I was advised to go with OEM thermostat as it rarely fails and if it does it's covered under VW warranty with free replacement and labor to do so ...

I'm going for this kit here http://www.blauparts.com/proddetail.asp?prod=GH21130-C (http://www.blauparts.com/proddetail.asp?prod=GH21130-C) and getting it forwarded to New Zealand via youshop, I will get the coolant locally (was thinking Pentrite http://www.penriteoil.co.nz/products.php?id_categ=6&id_products=600 (http://www.penriteoil.co.nz/products.php?id_categ=6&id_products=600) as it meets G12++ standards).
Also I wouldn't worry about getting a metal WP over plastic, old plastic WPs weren't good but manufactures have since moved to a newer type of plastic (PPS) which is much better.

Wouldn't it be risky to go with non OEM parts for this job?

It's all OEM quality so should be fine, should be just as good as the ECS aftermarket kit (and its more complete).
-
Okay cool . I'm getting the OEM kit but sold by ECS . Does Blau parts come with warranty if there is a failure caused by the parts ?( warranty that is valid in NZ )

Not sure, but if you look at the ECS website it looks like you get no warranty on genuine parts outside the US http://www.ecstuning.com/TermsOfUse/#product-warranty
Not sure if this also includes their aftermarket parts?
Genuine products sold outside of the contiguous US are sold as is with no expressed or implied warranty.
-
Oh that's a good spotting !! Didn't realise that

Blauparts have said they have a 1 year parts warranty (no labour) but I would need to pay for shipping.
I would imagine its not worth using the warranty in most cases as individual parts are fairly cheap and not worth the long wait/cost.
-
I guess warranty is important if the part is defective and causes major and spread damage to the rest of engine or other equipment.

If you're going to bring in a few parts from the US or UK to NZ, pay to look at using youshop, I'm finding it alot cheaper than the suppliers themselves, and at the moment if you use coupon "Howabout50" you get 50% off (one time use though).

I'm having a friend coming over from the states and he will bring them for me :) but thanks for the advice . I keep that in mind for other purchases
