Got an itch for that v6 sound!!
But I'll miss the power I think? Are they really that slow??
Help! Can't help but think its a downgrade not an upgrade? But would love to own a mint one, one day.
-
Not sure I would go so far as to say it would be a backward step but I would imagine you would notice the "dated" design... Perhaps a Mk5 R32 would be better, Still love the stance of those cars plus that lovely sounding engine. Personally I couldn't justify the running costs ... fuel, tax etc. Probably a fair bit slower than your current car unless in the wet off the line ... :surprised:
-
Love the look of the mk4 instead of mk5 really...
-
Someone off the forum did MK5 GTI to MK4 R32 and although he loved it at first, he sold it a few months later :sad1:
-
Yep, your totally mad
-
Your mad keep the Edition 30 as going from 350-360 bhp to 240 is a BIG step down in power. But at the end of the day its your choice just make sure you don't regret it if you do.
-
That's the thing it's a big step down in power.... But would the sound make up for it?!

Joesgti done it I think
-
I would rather have more power under my right foot than noise, but then again i'm a boost junkie.
-
You'll be losing 100ish bhp in real numbers but the lack of a turbo kick will make it feel like you've lost 200bhp.
They sound incredible but the 4wd system and the incredibly smooth, linear power make for a boring drive.
Not to mention the mk4 has a softer less responsive chassis to start with.
The only option here is a mk5 r32 turbo.

I still find the mk4 R32 desirable. Would have to be a highly tuned one though :driver:

Mk4 R32 is the best looking Golf to date IMO but would I swap one for my Eddy, feck no. If I could have both.......thats a whole other story!
Is your money, you'll need to scratch that itch sooner then later.
-
End of the day it yr choice & yr money... :happy2:
-
I'll be honest the music they can make is fantastic! :fighting:
-
They do have an epic sound track.... It's all a bit of a commotion for no "go"
-
I sold my 310bhp ED30 last year and still regret it to this day. Even tho I ran an M5 & stock KO3 GTI afterwards I still miss it...
If your getting an R32. Get a MK5 R32 with a good spec
-
Huge reduction in power and torque, plus a heavier car probably.
S4 V8 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcnvTNmrgPo) with some cans on it? At least you're somewhere near the same power, albeit with a lot of weight.
-
Still humming and harring!
Thanks for the replies guys!
-
Not sure what you're all on about losing power????
Nothing is as quick as an R32 :innocent:
-
I've thought about swapping my stage 2 eddy for a mk5 r32 a few times :rolleye:
-
I bought a MK4 R32 new back in the day and apart from the soundtrack, it is one of the worst buys I've ever made, I kept it a year and was pleased to see the back of it. The suspension was rock hard, the throttle was too sensitive and 1st gear might as well not be there, you need 2nd as soon as the wheels start turning. I've also had an Ed30 and I would have that everyday of the week over the MK4 R32, although I definitely missed the sound. If I was going to get another R32 (which I'm not!) I would probably get a DSG MK5. It's not as hard core, much easier to live with and the DSG gearbox is perfect for the V6 engine. All IMHO.
-
What about a mk3 VR6? Hear me out...
They're still a lovely sounding V6. They're cheap to buy and repair/modify. They weigh less than the mk4 R32. Here's the deal sealer... You could probably afford to keep both cars.

Was going to swap my gttdi for a mk4 r32 but decided to keep mine

Do you have a white stick? :signLOL:
Four reasons to move to a MKIV R32......
You cannot afford the MKV R32
Sound
AWD grip
HGP/HPA turbo upgrade
and only the last one is acceptable.

^^^^ Sticks and stones young man!
Certainly better than all those Carbon Fibre clad R's you see nowadays. :innocent:

Hopefully that link works

You'd be mad, I drove one when comparing to my old lcr.
The r32 felt slow compared to that so it would be horrible going from a 2.0tfsi to one.
-
Been all day cleaning and polishing and waxing the eddy.....think I've fell back in love....after a drive as well
U were all right power may well be everything!
-
I went from a stage 1 golf R to a mk5 R32 a few months ago  coming from a mk5 GTI, the R just felt too safe and didn't really do it for me, and once you've heard the howl from the VR6, a 4 cylinder just don't cut it.. regardless of what exahust you're running!
The torque that the 3.2 puts out is very impressive (often sit in 6th at 30mph) and apart from the obvious drop in power, the noise, smoothness and torque from 1k revs is extremely addictive.. plus, I still average 31mpg on the journey to work, where the R managed 32/33.. not bad for the big lump that it is!

The R certainly is more thirsty then the Ed30,I've heard a few people say this.

Agree with you 100% on the VR6 - one drove past me the other day at full chat & it sounded the nuts.
However, I'd have thought the chances of finding a mk3 without terminal rust these days must be hard?
-
Get this :driver: 4mo suprcharged
http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm?itemId=141315106794
-
Yes
-
No....
There are very few charged R32s that work properly and are actually fast cars. Most spend there life's in bits in a garage somewhere or surrounded by a puddle of oil in santa pod car park.
-
I'll rephrase that one then, yes your mad if you go from a stage 2+ ED30 to a mk4 R32 but on the other hand if it were boosted or going to be boosted that would be a whole different ball game .....
-
Mate my advice to you is go to a dealer pretend your interested and drive one, I've got a stage 1 mk5 with an AMD Remap which is just shy of 270 bhp although the 32's sound wicked mine spanked one the other day. Yours is running a lot more power than mine so you would notice it even more!
-
I had a Mk5 R32 and it was a nice car to drive and quite quick but I couldn't justify the fuel costs driving 40 miles a day so I sold it, bought a run-around for a while until I found another car and ended buying an Edition 30 and got a Stage 1 map put on it....Has got to be one of the best car decisions I have ever made, best of both worlds and much quicker in my opinion (Weight difference too!)
-
I owned a Mk5 R32, great car with great road presence but the power delivery and performance is nothing compared to my Stage 1 Edition 30. As much as I loved the sound it made, it wasn't worth the £550 a year tax
-
Not sure how much the mk4 r32 is on tax?
Has anyone had experience with the mk4? Everyone seems to be mk5.
-
yeah i had a mk4 before the edition 30 came out i px mine in for my ed30 best move i ever made car wise.I will say this though they do sound awesome this is mine
www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiv5RBG70dg
bloody awesome noise but i just hated the big seats and it was not that fast being honest even mapped up with exhaust and cams they only do about 270bhp isn and people saying they do 300 with out forced induction are talking crap i know i saw every state of tune back then and no matter the roller non made much over 270 without forced induction
-
Obvously such a heavy (non-turbo'd) car is not going to be as fast as a 2.0 remapped turbo motor, however I feel that for the majority of driving I do (twisty A-roads, short sections of dual carriageway) the R32 gives me a much more rewarding driving experience.. if I were deaf it would be a different story.. stage 1/2 GTI every time
-
I'm considering the swap to either a mk4/5 R32. Inline 4s just sound awful so fancy some V6 NA woofly goodness.
-
No 4 pot can match the glorious sound of a V6 with a decent zorst, however a V6 simply cannot match the feel of a forced induction 4 pot.
So make your choice deep aural pleasure with shallow power or thunderous power and a shallow sounding engine?

Makes my decision easier having a std K03 GTI :signLOL:
