Title: Mk5_edition 30, the little brother
Post by: mk_boy85 on July 11, 2014, 11:23:15 pm
Well this is my second thread on here now, some of you may know my other car 'from scene queen to mean' well I got bored waiting to get it finished so I recently brought myself an edition 30 that was damaged. It wasn't well looked after at all but it was cheap and I had all the parts to repair which made it viable.

It's an 07 with an ok spec but not massively tricked up compared to some but I plan to retro fit a few nice mods as well as some power, audio and a good stance.

Here's some pics of the damage and condition I received it in

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.tapatalk.com%2Fd%2F14%2F07%2F12%2Fe3yquvu8.jpg&hash=92f02122bf513b96f38dc5cdfa2337f2f4db0e2f)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.tapatalk.com%2Fd%2F14%2F07%2F12%2Fazapu4yj.jpg&hash=fe5a75ab1dc02c9a2de3bc4ab79b345677e37b8c)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.tapatalk.com%2Fd%2F14%2F07%2F12%2Fnegypuju.jpg&hash=cc9767cd2bc8a1a36530170eaeacaf3db43e1272)

It hadn't had a hard knock at all but After having a good look over it what I thought was a wing, rad pack, bumper, lights and a bit of paint to a pair of door skins, slam panel, full respray.

Here's some pics of the work in progress

While working on it I realised a top mount had gone as well as a snapped spring so I installed so H&r ultralows

Here's some interior shots, it needed som major attention as it was covered in mould and generally hanging

Brought this this week
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.tapatalk.com%2Fd%2F14%2F07%2F12%2Fevy5ujy3.jpg&hash=94737eeabd018d10291794162b28182e79e9acce)

But it's no where near deep enough for my jl audio w6 so I ended up installing 3 18mm speaker rings and an extra 18mm face

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.tapatalk.com%2Fd%2F14%2F07%2F12%2Fgumujeda.jpg&hash=ec09000fc6c558564ebd17afa7d4555b428426bc)

I weren't happy with the step on the rings so I sanded the edges to 45 degrees and fibre glassed around the ring so skim with filler to give It a cleaner flowing look

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.tapatalk.com%2Fd%2F14%2F07%2F12%2Fu4ube7u8.jpg&hash=329a47e6ed50a6b6594773671ec734dc6277d7c1)

I'm hoping to install most of my audio this weekend so I'll update as progress is made.

So this is the ED30... Didn't realise when you said it needed a bit of work you meant this. But considering the work done to you other GTI, can see why this is a minor project.

Looks like great progress there.

Rust and mould?  I wonder what sort of life it has had!!

Good luck with it - good to see it being brought back.  :happy2:

It had everything apart from tlc. Luckily the mechanical side is very good with a great service history

Yeah they came back perfect. Can't remember exactly what colour but I wanted something as close to factory as possible.

Had a full day trying to get the audio some thing like and I had a very productive day, here's my progress

Amps I'm position(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.tapatalk.com%2Fd%2F14%2F07%2F13%2Fhy3eqabu.jpg&hash=dd6c2505ccaaefb512d5b748a9ae3969fea8d756)

Bolts fixed through to hold the box secure
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.tapatalk.com%2Fd%2F14%2F07%2F13%2Fgy2uduny.jpg&hash=5ed1c42529f5c1f9ffafecbe609a46f98d99f86a)

Box finished with a skim of filler and installed with jl a audio w6
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.tapatalk.com%2Fd%2F14%2F07%2F13%2Fy7uraret.jpg&hash=ae23f9a4e8d85e83ea409b12cd98b4540b1ea300)

Before the false floor is going in, mouthed the amps like this so my spare wheelis still accessible
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.tapatalk.com%2Fd%2F14%2F07%2F13%2Fe6yqequ6.jpg&hash=b23d0b3b820d964af7851e47e7a05ef34cf1b7d8)

Floor in, just needs a finish with the router and trim and hopefully look decent.

Finally I installed the remote bass control, not 100% on the location but I'll see how it goes for now

Where did you run your power cables? Also, is the battery in the boot as I thought you're supposed to put the in-line fuse within 18" of the battery? Thinking of running the power cable up the centre of my interior as I want to wire all speakers to an amp so don't want interference.

Yeah it's a cat d which is a shame but what damage it had is probably no different to 60% of cars on the road that people have pranged. It's made a decent car though

The power cable was already ran but it runs down the passenger side, I have a single 4 gauge in the battery tray too. All my other cables are ran down the same side but not directly next to them.

So I may take this system a little further.

Nice boot build. Custom built sub enclosure? I finally made a start on fitting the interior you sold me months ago!

Yeah I had a quick glance. Looks like you made good progress. Have you gone for 6.5" components front and rear or a 3 way set up at the front. My enclosure is a standard one from radio world modified to house the w6. It may be for sale so if I run 2 w6's.

I've gone for 6.5" 2 way both front and rear, was hoping to run the front off a 4 channel amp but that's not happening due to wiring difficulties. I'll probably use the rear 2 channels of my amp to power a 12" sub at some point, when I get a working amp back.

I brought the actual enclosure and modified it to suit the jl. I'm sure the enclosure would house a normal sub.

Saw you had a few problems. I'd say there is a problem with the amp to keep blowing fuses. I had it and it was a capacitor inside the amp.

Hopefully I'll get a replacement soon so I can get my rear speakers working again. Still deciding whether to get a small sub or have 6x9's in the rear shelf and relive my younger Essex days.

I'd get a nice sub instead of 6x9's loads cleaner look and sound.

As this is my daily driver I've just been using it as I'm quite reluctant to alter it too much from a standard car as I already have my gti for modifying but I've decided on changing the wheels, couldn't turn these down........ Oz supaleggra fully forged 3 piece splits. These are light nearly as light as my pro race 1.2's on my other gti.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ftapatalk.imageshack.com%2Fv2%2F14%2F12%2F26%2F0f2cc808196d5efc63b454d3a8376a47.jpg&hash=72851a11e230cb2931ca4f0b97ca479c9efc331a)

I'm going to split them down and a quick refurb ready for summer but torn between Matt black centres and gloss lips or sliver centres polished lips. Think I'll go for the black option as it's easier to maintain

I don't think I'll be selling them if I'm honest. Just had them refurbed and fresh tyres too so they'd be strong money.

That would be a real shame mate, Knowing how much time and effort has gone into it,
But it must be frustrating being so close but yet so far with it.

I just haven't got the time I used to have to use it and enjoy it, it'll either stand around, turned into a track inspired show car (waste) or a 3-4 trackdays a year car which is a waste so ill probably let someone else enjoy it as I have too many commitments now

From what I last saw, just sorting the Haldex 4wd out and then general tweaking and running in. The engine and chassis is all but completed, I'll certainly be looking at it this Friday when I'm up AKS Tuning. :happy2: Not that I'd be interested in such a machine, of course...

I need to get a new rear diff as the one I've installed is faulty and I have a few engine issues to sort out then I'll decide what I'll do with it. Least as a running car it'll sell better

Back on the topic of this edition 30 managed to fit my h&r ultralows and new wheels today. (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ftapatalk.imageshack.com%2Fv2%2F15%2F01%2F31%2Fff6930519d6a80300419094544e91a4f.jpg&hash=aa10d8669236cfe5233aa5f86e2bdf06f1a5f495)

Got loads of travel left front and rear but I'm going to need to c-notch it next week in order to get lower. Also having the wheel faces machined to get a bit more tuck to allow me to go lower. Just not sure what colour to go as the satin gold has grown on me.
