I want to install a new boot handle on my mk5 GTI so I went into VW.
The price of a new boot handle full assembly is the same for the mk5 & mk6 so I want to know if the mk6 will fit the mk5? Will all connections still work as normal i.e. plu and play?
Has anyone done this work on their own car?
-
Yes the Mk6 fits. it protrudes slightly more and the cable in the boot is runs slightly tighter due to the connector positon. The Mk6 hasn't got the nice damping action the mk5 had on mine but you'll not need to worry about white worm again on a mk6 version :happy2:

That's actually the reason I'm changing! My slow close handle developed white worm so I added a Mk4 badge to the handle but it just doesn't look great so I decided I'd update it completely.
Although it should be easy enough to find you wouldn't know the part number would you?
What's you honest opinion, mk5 or mk6 handle nicer looking?
Thanks for the help.

IMO Mk6 is nice but MK5 feels nicer and better quality. Looks to me that they've cut some costs with the MK6 variant. The damping mechanism on the 5 is nicer and the cable tightness on the 6 when installed isn't ideal. I did mine a few years back to avoid whiteworm before people started installing there own 3D badges on mk5 mechanisms. I'd recommend a refurbed or bespoke mk5 badge as a way forward as you can put whatever colour combo you want on and avoid whiteworm.
'brookesb32' is your man if you want someone to prepare you a bespoke tailgate badge. :happy2:

Very much appreciated! I'll definitely take all of it into consideration now and see what work I can get done this weekend.

Mk5 mechanism to keep the soft close and Mk6 badge.
Is this easy to do cheers

Pop Simon (Brookesb32 on here) a PM and he might be able to sort you out with a slow close Mk5 mech with either a Mk5 or Mk6 VW emblem. He's the man with these things.

I bought the mk6 badge from eBay , around £20 iirc and fitted to my mk5 boot mechanism after removing the mk5 badge, took me best part of 10 minutes :happy2:

A VW badge, within a VW badge, very clever :happy2:

What did you do in then? Adhesive pads on the back and snapped all the clips off?
-
Snapped all but the largest, it's the only one that fits anyway, haven't used any adhesive but you may want to consider it, mine hasn't moved a mm since fitting though
-
Right oh, be ordering my badge this week then. Thanks

Hm 30 quid lips postage seems a lot for an emblem. The matte black ones go for 10£!! I don't know about matte black on steel grey however... Do you think I could get a black one and just spray it chrome?
-
Best results for spraying are using rustoleum aluminium silver or plastikote Make sure the badges you order are bevelled

They seemed to have bumped up in price, I recall paying £15 max for mine last year

Wonder if anyone could help me please? I've been trying to fit a new MK6 badge (5K0853630B) but it doesnt seem to be even close to fitting, it's a good bit too small. The rim of the badge wont even get close to 'wrapping' round the edge of the boot handle. Was there a few different revisions of handle? I only ask as I read above that those that have successfully fitted them said to remove all the tabs except the largest one, but my handle doesnt even have a slot for the one large tab, just what looks like 3 small holes positioned at about 12,5 and 7 oclock.
Any help or pointers as to where I've gone wrong would really be apreciated.
Thanks,
Scott.

Anyone?
