Title: Strange service information from vw...
Post by: HallED30 on July 16, 2014, 06:52:21 pm
Hi guys,

Just got back from having my car in for its 50k service from Vw for the first time since i got it in late may. Vw pointed out that the car (2007 ed30 52k miles) has got a full vw service history with the service intervals from 16000 miles onwards has the brake fluid service and cam belts (toothed belts) not been changed or tensioner checked ticked as not done? The car has been serviced at a vw main dealer every time? This is worrying me especially the cam belt because if it hasn't been changed and snapped it could blow my engine? I'm right in saying this should be changed every 4 years no? also the brake fluid should be changed at least every 2 years? Does anyone else have this in the VW service booklet?

The older rule of thumb was every 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever was sooner. Modern cam belts are made of better materials, but if in doubt change it. Not worth risking the internals of your engine over what is, relatively, a cheap job.

Brake fluid initially is 3 years then every 2 years after.
Cambelts/waterpump, I have always gone on 4 years regardless of miles.

Spark plugs on the GTI are noted as every 60k i think

I flicked through my service book after purchasing my golf last year (2005 gti) and there was no record of a brake fluid change in the 6 years it was done at vw garages, I was also concerned but couldn't get an answer from anyone

Have you any paper work such as invoices? I looked through my paper work instead of the service stamp book to gain a better idea of what had been done. Like I said, regardless of history, get these things done yourself for peace of mind and then you know better when to do them again in the future.

Well the car is now 7 and a half years old so i would have presumed it would have been done. Especially since the plugs have been changed and the filters too? I have a reciept for £299 that im going to chase up on i think. Just for reference how much should i be looking to pay to have my cambelt changed and my brake fluid done?? VW quoted £400 and £100.
