Title: Long life and non long life servicing

Could someone tell me if the long life and not longlife servicing ( oil changes ) is something related to specific MK5 GTIs or not ?

I'm thinking to do oil change with longlife Castrol SLXIII 5w30 and wondering if it's worth it or wasting money .
I could get Castrol edge 5w30 vw502 for cheaper if no differnece as such.
 
I'm planning to change the oil every year or 7000kms whichever comes first ( year would be most likely )

Don't waste your money on long life oil just service the car every year with a decent quality approved oil

According to folk on here its good to use long life oil even if you're on yearly servicing.

I use Quantum longlife 3 but replace it every 8kish... Cheaper than Edge.

Fancy trying that Millers Nanodrive see if it stops the need to topup inbetween drops. Very expensive though, almost three times more than Quantum. :surprised:

Exactly same situation with me. Wouldn't do 5k mile oil changes if I was paying £MEGA for oil. Since replacing my oil with Quantum it's started to drink it a bit  :sad1:

i don't know where this longlife oil malarky comes from but all you need to know is that regardless of the service plan time scheme you should be using a fully synthetic oil 5w30 is ideal Castrol, Shell or Millers.

Not any oil that is semi-synth as that is crap.  :fighting:

The Longlife service regimes probably came about from manufacturers trying to appeal to fleet buyers that don't need oil servicing for 18k+ miles --- nasty isn't it.  

There's nothing wrong with the Quantum Longlife III oil, it's fully synthetic, and meets the regs; might even be rebranded Castrol Edge, only cheaper.

Oil fine, service intervals not fine.

This is true, Quantum is also fine and is rumoured/supposed to be a re-brand.

People just need to get the concept of "long life oil" out of their heads. Oil is either fully synthetic and meets the VW standard and is therefore good for their motor or it is semi synth crap and should be going anywhere near their engine, regardless of whether they are changing it more often than their skanks or about as often as a leap year.

Am I right in thinking that because fully synthetic oil is artificially made, it can with stand higher temperatures within the engine (mainly when a turbo is operating) and therefore is less prone to being split into fractions (similar to the principal of how crude oil is separated into fractions in the first place)?

Also, this is the reason "long life" oil is fully synthetic as it can withstand the repeated heat cycling of the engine, where as semi-synthetic will eventually break down and require changing sooner.

I may be wrong... (I love science, me.)

Longlife oil is perfect but don't then do longlife servicing. Stick to time and distance servicing but use long life oil.

Got it . Lon life oil but regular servicing . For me $20 difference between 502 and 504 oil per year is not much .

Although the only thing I hear is the long life oils due to their fully synthetic nature can soften rubber seals of engine and cause oil leak over time .

Is this true ?

I'm going to use this stuff http://www.penriteoil.co.nz/products.php?id_categ=1&id_brand=2&id_products=12 and service every 10,000km its VW 504 approved

Goes for $100 for a 5L at Repco in NZ otherwise Castrol Edge 5w-30 can be had for about $50 when on special (which is quite often) but its only 502 approved.

VW dealer in Wellington had Castrol SLXIII 5w30 long life for 105. But I heard good things about Penrite as well
