Title: Exhaust clamp help.
Post by: lady_gti on July 20, 2014, 10:47:05 pm
Today I attempted to remove my pre cat, knowing that the nuts connecting the down pipe to the turbo were going to be a pain I started there. Well they came off really easily no problems there, convincing myself this was going to be an easy job... I was so very wrong. The exhaust clamp nuts have completely rusted and are in the worse place possible, I've tried everything to get them off but no luck. So after all that I had to put everything back together. The best solution is to cut the dam thing off and replace it. Does anyone know the part number and the best place to get one so I can reattempt this next weekend?
Thanks

You've come to the right conclusion, always assume the nuts are not going to undo and just grind off then replace with a new clamp unit.  I've sorted loads of VAG exhausts over the years and whilst the systems and clamps are high quality, the nuts/bolts always rust solid and round off given the harsh environment they have to endure.

Good luck with the rest of the job!

Finally got rid of my pre cat. I don't know why these things happen to me but my car just doesn't want to be modified. Everything I've done so far has been a pain and a struggle even for the simple tasks but its done and won't be attempting anything like this again!!!!
I ended up have to drop the whole exhaust system as I still couldn't get the clamp off.
Everyone likes a pic or two so here goes.

Great job! Looking to tackle this one vey soon! How did you find removing the whole system? Surprised you could get the down pipe through the front gap?

Just make sure none of the old cat falls down into the system, spent weeks trying to find out why a gti was down on power, turned out to be debris from when someone carried out a pre cat delete. It was clogging up the second cat.

If I had managed to get the clamp off the whole system wouldn't have had to be dropped which was fairly easy to get off but putting it back on was a different story, definitely a two person job. Getting the downpipe through the gap wasn't too bad just a bit of teasing and careful handling. I made sure no pre cat got sucked through by using a handy dyson  :happy2:
Also an old duvet was some help as I didn't want to damage my back box, centre box wasn't a problem either as that has previously been removed.
It's well worth doing as I have noticed a power improvement and she feels less restricted ready for revo stage 1

Thanks for the tips  :happy2: ah I see thought you left the clamp on and just removed the full system connected  :signLOL: though it would have been a bit of a challenge.
