Looking for a cheaper to run/tax/insure/fuel/repair/modify car than the golf.
Also a car that feels like it's doing 90mph when it's doing 30mph and not the other way round.
Anybody here have any experience of a toyota mr2 roadster? 2000 and newer.

All I know is my mk2 golf vr6 made one look it was going backwards on goodwood circuit :driver:

I had a 02 plate a fair few years ago. Good solid car not lighting quick think they're 138bhp but you're that low to the ground you feel like you're flying along. From what I rember good and fuel. Completely impracticable but they're not for that. I also looked at a mx-5 and I thought the mr2 was a much better car. I would say go for it for a bit of fun. They're good value these days.

I'd love one but at £7k for a rough one it's a little out of the mr2 price range.
Just been to test drive an mx5. Felt very nice and wouldn't look TOO girly if slammed with some polished dish alloys on :p

I owned an 03 plate (6 speed) prior to the GTI for 2 years:

Was a great car in the summer with the top down even though I got some abuse of random passers by (w@nker, gay etc!)
Could get an overnight bag in but not much else.
Winter was fun - useless on snow/slush so much so it was laughable.
If you do get one try and get a hardtop, feels a lot more complete when that's on through the colder months.
The Mr2 roadster forum was a helpful place too.
As others have said its not a fast car but is fun and you can kick the back out nicely on damp greasy roads.
Be warned though mine gave me real bad b0llock ache! my work commute was an hour each way in traffic, must have been the low slung seating position but used to kill my nuts! :surprised: :ashamed:
Think it would be a great Sunday toy still

Thanks. How would you rate running costs in comparison to the gti?

Selling the golf a buying a cheaper car to free up a few grand to help me with the new home. If a cheaper car is going to cost me more to run then it almost makes the swap not worthwhile.

It's a bit hard to do a like for like as I'm covering a lot more miles in the golf than I ever did in the MR2.
I only ran mine on 95ron though so was spending less on fuel. Not sure but seem to remember getting about 300 mile off a tank.

I bought one of these a few months ago as a summer run about. Without wanting to sound too :pomppomp: I think that they are awesome cars. Yes straight line performance isn't going to set the world alight, and it's not the most practical of cars, but that's not what this car is about. Handling is extremely sharp - go kart like, mpg seems to be great and there's little to go wrong with them. It sounds odd, but it's one of those cars that makes to smile each time to drive it.
I'd recommend reading a few buying guides as pre face lift models have a rep for drinking oil, and would deffo advise getting a hardtop. Join mr2roc and do some research :happy2:
I paid £1,000 for my pre facelift (with hardtop), and spent a little money on a good service and some refurbished facelift wheels and it hasn't missed a beat :happy2:

Driven an MR2 and owned an MX5 ("it's the wife's"). No numb nuts in either.
For any money, the MX5 is the better drive by far. Properly steerable on the throttle (don't tell the wife), and cheap as chips to run.
But you need a wife.

I would totally disagree with a MX5 being a better drive - certainly better for drifting and going sideways, but for a spirited drive (imo) the MR2 is a better car.
Both cars are great value for the cheap thrills that they can provide.
Deffo agree on the need for a missus :signLOL:
