Either buy one with a code or get the code from any of the ebay sellers. With code is better as the seller obviously either knows the history of the unit or has done the work for you.

I didn't have the code for my stereo so I called vw and gave them the serial number and they provided the code.

If that doesn't work, try ebay like Viking said.

Just a word about the dealers. Following a spate of thefts from the forecourts of local dealers, they're no longer providing codes remotely and the stereo needs to be fitted in a car before they'll do it. Also, all the serial numbers of the stolen units are logged with VW, so if you try and get a code for a stolen one then it might get awkward. This also applies to Ebay sellers who are simply accessing the VW database to retrieve codes from the system.

So much better to buy one with a code supplied, unless you know for sure that it's above board.

Really?

I only called the other week and they gave me it although I was calling about other things relating to my car so that's maybe why.

Little off topic but I have a rcd500 mp3 stereo with code, anyone know how much it's probably worth? Looked on ebay and they range from £70 all the way upto £200 which is obviously too much.

That will only be the local dealer network (Lookers) I presume, and will be a franchise decision rather than a VWUK decision. Still, the stolen ones are bound to turn up somewhere, so just try and make sure it's not you who gets one.

Ouch! Was it working when you got the car?

Yes, then when the engine fell out, after the work was completed the radio was asking for the code. Which isn't written anywhere or on the unit itself. eBay seller returned it as stolen when accessing the db.
