My gti keeps going just above 1000rpm,the fans work and I do get stuck in traffic a lot any ideas.

When I'm at stand still the car revs above 1000rpm by its self when it should be 700/800.

That's a statement. No one on here can verify that without seeing the car.

If you start it from cold what does it idle at?

So under what conditions does it start to idle at 1k rpm?

When its hot and been stuck in traffic for 20 mins.

Why didn't you label this thread something like "GTI high idle" that would help attract people that have had the same problem. . .
