Title: Steel Grey & Plasti Dipped Monza's?
Post by: Jomty on August 05, 2014, 10:48:41 am
Hi guy's,

Apologies if this is in the wrong place. I'm trying to find a picture of a steel grey GTi with plasti-dipped 18" Monza's. Also do you ruin the finish of the alloy in the spraying process? Im contemplating doing it to mine as they are white worming (not too bad), but enough for me to look at doing something with them.

Thanks.

plasti dip is a quick and easy option to do, if u don't like it peel it off. I have mine done in Matt black on a black car

How did you do it, is it a case of clean the wheels and spray on? Yeah they look smart on black, can't find any bloody pictures on grey though.

I would be keen to know and see how's it's done and the finished result. Been thinking about steel grey myself . My 17 inch factory one is painted silver and my car is white. A bit of darker color wheels would look nicer :)

yep, make sure the wheels. U don't have to remove the wheels from the car , cover the brakes discs with plastic bags. First layer should be a light one. Do about 5 layers, as for cleaning them u have to becarefull. Don't use no chemicals just water and soap or a pressure washer. There's a video on YouTube on how to do it

I checked out a couple of youtube vidoe's last night and it seems pretty easy. The channel was "Dip Your Car". They where doing all sorts of stuff with it. Still can't find a steel grey GTi with black monza's on it though, maybe it looks sh*te.  :signLOL:

I think Anthracite Grey is good mixture of dark but shiny color. Has anyone tried this color ?
So if someone wants more metallic, do you mix them while painting or the shine layer after the base layer?

That, I hadn't thought about, and I bet it would look good, thanks for the idea!

Just been on the plasti dip UK website, you spray the base layer on and allow it to dry, then put as many coats of the metalizer spary on as you like to get the finish you want. Roll on pay-day  :drinking:

Yep and can use glossifier on the grey as well. Watched video of a guy using both on his 370z and the result looks good ! Dark but shiny as well :)

Hmm, so from the website it's gonna cost about £100 for all the stuff. That's with 1 can of grey primer (Poss need 2?), 4 cans of the gun metal grey and 2 cans of metalizer... Is this over-kill? I thought it was gonna be a relatively cheap job, another 100 and I could just get them powder coated!

Do you need the primer? The gun metal should be good , I read if wheels are small 2 or max 3 bottles are enough for couple of layers of it on each wheel

When I've looked it says to use the primer, but the video I watched last night he didn't use it, so you could probably get away without I think.

u do a black base coat and do the metallic on top of the base coats once dried

if I was u I would get 2 cans of normal plastidip and one of metalizer. I done all 4 wheels with one can, 4 coats

Did you use glossifier on your wheels Alex? Any chance of a photo ?:) would like to see some photos before I order mine.

I'm not quite sure what color would be best for the standard 17inch alloys for GTI and the white paint of the car. Any suggestions?
