Title: LED Number plate lights OEM.
Post by: ARV_90 on August 17, 2014, 08:36:56 pm
I would like some LED number plate lights for my MK6 GTD 2010,  Mine have the normal 510 bulbs that are in a holder that pushes into the light unit that just clips into the bumper, do Vw do any or is it going to be the E-bay one's with the trailing resistor block and wiring.

I run a set of genuine mk6 led numberplate units in my mk5. They are a straight swap with no errors etc. they were about £50 for the set a few years ago from vw. Haven't got part numbers to hand but I'm sure a parts monkey will find them  :happy2:

Thanks for the info guys, got a couple of options to look at  :happy2:

The ones off ebay do they have to have the resistor box with them... it does just show them on their own in the link.

Scott,  May have to drop Ed a line

I will also give VW a bell and see what the monkey's come up with

I had the genuine 2012 Mk6 ones in my 2011 Mk6 (and my 2008 mk5) and it brought up a bulb-out warning on the dash

I am not using a resistor box, they do come as part of the package, just there if needed I guess. No codes/light issues with mine

Seems odd that the genuine one's fault but the ebay one's are ok... might risk the ebay one's... give it a go see what happens

Pulled the trigger on the one's in Sug's link. Let you know how it goes guys. cheers for the help.  :drinking:

Hi, just posting this to make mk5 owners aware of the problem I encountered. Admittedly the original poster (ARV_90) is asking for advice on his mk6 golf, but I noticed the post from Monkey10 saying he had no problems fitting these units to his mk5 ed30. On seeing Monkey10's recommendation I purchased the same number plate light units for my mk5 (ed30) but they were not a direct fit. The original mk5 number plate light wiring feeds from the left and there isn't enough play in the wiring for these units to be fitted symmetrically as the right hand side unit requires more play in the wiring to fit correctly than is available  :happy2:

Hi, yes I've quoted for mk5 I've read it wrong mk6 fit but need coding as my mates did using vagcom plenty of info online. Then the light stays off.
As for not fitting a mk5 due to wiring being too short I've fitted these to 4 mk5s with no problems including mine so not sure why yours is different.
thanks

Got a set of these from demon666's link. It took 5 days delivery from china, and it was an easy fit. Defo worth £9.99, as most uk sellers sell them for £20 plus.

I just took apart my original housing and replaced the bulbs with these and clipped back together, job done. No warning lights at all, look great too!

Thread update,

I decided to go with the one's SUG suggested in the end... These did come with quite a large resistor pack and a little loom that you plugged into the original socket which had two little plugs on... one for the resistor pack and the other that plugged into the LED light unit, I did try them without the resistor ... they worked fine but gave  the light out error on the dash so I plugged the resistor in and they work fine with no errors. I did end up putting a strip of double sided tape on the flat face of the resistor pack as it is rather big ... sort of thumb size with an aluminium case...  as I pushed them up into the bumper stuck them to the top ledge so they wouldn't be swinging around then just clipped the LED light unit in a 5 minuet job. I must say they are rather bright you wont miss them being LED when following ...

Took a couple of pictures with my Iphone so not brilliant but you can see how bright they are. Thanks to all who had an input  :happy2:

Sorry to bring up an old thread - I recently bought a set of MK6 LED rear number plate lights (Genuine VW) but I seem to be getting a number plate light defective message on my dash.

Any ideas?

What model year?

MY2008 used to throw a dash light, I posted up about it years ago and the consensus back then was later model years was hit and miss as to whether this happened, something to do with a different CECM module maybe. I binned my off for upgraded Mtec bulbs as I got sick of the dash light

One thing you could try is turning of the cold diagnosis for the number plate lights in VCDS, I never tried it, might be worth a shot

@fab5freddy (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=3064) thanks for the response. I think it will be the case with my car as it's a 2007 model. But a Dubai import so it's a 2005 (axx engine) did try switching off cold diagnostics. But no joy.

Can I change the bulbs on them to the error free ones and make it work that way? Bit pointless I guess as I suppose I could do the same with my old mk5 units and keep it running that way?

Thanks

You can fit bulb out error delete resistors from carsystems.pl, for example. I have these in both my Golfs which are MY2008 and MY2009 without issues. Just P&P. Weird that a few mk5 Golfs get the error.

Thanks @Shoduchi (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10590) to be honest I might not bother as that's another £30 on top of the £25 I paid for the lights thinking these would be a fit taking the mod cost to £55 for something I wasn't even that bothered about doing!

Better off chucking them or selling them on the forum see if anyone wants them as it's not worth the hassle for me it seems.

Yeah, it's understandable. I paid 10 €/each for my sets, which was a steal price. I'm sure you can sell them easily if that's what you decide to do.

I have had 2 2005 MK5 GTI's and on the first I had no errors at all, on the 2nd I get an occasional dash light. I'm guessing this is due to slightly different CECM modules?

I am one of the unlucky ones with an Ed30 where the Check bulb light with genuine VW LED Mk6 lights occasionally comes on so I just disabled the bulb out in VCDS for the number plate lights. When is an LED going to fail anyway?

I find some of the pattern lookie likie ones can be very bright from some of the pictures I have seen so wanted the standard demure look  .
