Title: Faz's Black GTI SOLD - Now a Shadow Blue GTI! Stage 1 complete
Post by: fazi123 on August 18, 2014, 11:45:56 pm
Hi guys!

So I've had my GTI for a couple of months. I've made some subtle changes to it. I've promised myself not to get too carried away with it, and have largely stuck to this

Mods so far -
 - Dropped the Detroit Monza's in favour of some Edition 30 Pescara's.
 - I've changed all the interior bulbs and the number plate bulbs to LED's.
 - And finally I've upgraded the front end to some lovely genuine R32 xenons!
 - 15mm spacers on the rear axle

Anyway, Il let the pictures do the talking! Hope you like it!

Heres how she stood when I got her :

Hi Usman - I loved the look on black wheels, until i marked one of them. It completely ruined the look for me so went with these which hide their kurbing etc MUCH better.

They are genuine R32 xenons.

Hello Guys!

I had a mk5 a few years ago (as you may have noticed! lol). I moved into an ST after the GTI as I figured I'll try one of them out. I then moved into an Audi A3 TDI Sline (was for sale on here) but I couldn't get on with a diesel. So the hunt for another GTI began and here I am back to where my first venture into a performance hatch started - the MK5 GTI!

So the new (to me) is an 06 Shadow Blue GTI. It has a pretty high spec from standard and I'm glad I held out for this one in the end.

Spec is as follows :
Bi-xenon headlights
Electric sunroof
Heated folding mirrors
18" Diamond cut monzas
Cloth interior
Cruise control
Auto dimming rear view mirror
MFSW
Electric drivers seat
Rear parking sensors

I've owned the car for just over a month and in that time I figured I'd get a few things done.
1. Full Service (it didn't need it, but I like to do one whenever I get a new motor) including all fluids (brake etc)
2. New Cam follower (the old one didn't look half as bad as I was expecting)
3. Timing belt + water pump service
4. DSG Service - VW also noticed the coil packs hadn't been replaced so did them for free too!
5. New main thermostat (it wasn't holding the temp at 90)

Anyway heres a pic (from the advert) - Will take LOADS more when the weather improves (And I can be bothered to wash it!)

Hope you like it!

I also hated the RCD300 system in there - the lack of MP3 support really grates me!

So a trip to @olsen-72 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=4567) was arranged and an RCD510, along with an armrest MDI KIT and Bluetooth kit were fitted oh and a Can gateway too!  I must add - great guy and great job too!

I decided against the RNS510 as I couldn't justify the cost for the NAV. Previously I had a RNSE in my A3 and no offence but the Audi system is miles ahead of the VW version minus the touchscreen. And even though I found the Audi system pretty decent I would almost always use my phone for the nav. So it would have been a wasted ~£200 quid for me.

Cheers buddy! Good to be back too!

I must say having opted for the DSG this time around it feels like I'm in the GTI for the first time! I'm amazed at the difference!

So the next things on my (relatively small) list for the moment:

Upgrading the interior switches to the MK6 chrome versions (ordered) - the old ones (especially the light switch) are looking pretty tired / dated.

And also changing the hazard light switch to the cherry version (ordered)

Then a new kitchen! but I don't think you guys are too interested in that.

So I also fixed an earlier mistake from trying to fit my MDI kit in myself. I scratched the gear surround with the screws holding the ashtray in.

So I used my mums help and the guide by @monte (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=878) in he's build thread to "fix" my errors.

@fazi123 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=9745) you got the MDI fitted in the end? Did you DIY?

Good job on your gear gaiter I need to do that to mine. Was it hard to do?

@shoaybmakda (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=12148) I ended up getting it fitted  :ashamed: - the chap had to take apart the Armrest and all sorts to get the wire up for the dock.

The gaiter was VERY easy to do. You just have to be very careful when you separate the actual leather gaiter from the plastic/aluminium trim as the plastic trim (holding the leather gaiter to the surround) could snap. It took no longer then 30 mins though to be honest. If you can fit the MDI yourself - you'll have no issues ;)

@fazi123 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=9745) ah I didn't know the leather could be detached - I thought it was all one thing. So I'm guessing it's detach the leather, gaitor gets separated and then you can wrap etc?

@shoaybmakda (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=12148) almost... once you've detached the leather you them disconnect the connector which powers the lighting on the gear selector. Then you can take the surround out of the car. Then before wrapping it you should separate the aluminium trim from the plastic surround. Then a quick clean and your ready for the wrap! :)

Give me a shout if you need any more details. It's really easy!

So I've been having difficulties with a wet passenger footwell. Not sure how longs its been an issue but I've only noticed it recently.

I've booked it in to a garage on Saturday to get it looked at - should hopefully have some positive new then :)

@fazi123 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=9745) I've seen this on mine on be passenger footwell and have seen the water trickling down from near the front of the door panel close to the glove box. Was doing some reading and someone mentioned might be the sunroof and noticed you have one too so might be a similar issue.

Let me know how you get on  :happy2:

So a bit of a update on my car then!

The wet pasenger foot well issue has finally been resolved! It turns out the drain from the sunroof had been dislodged so it was leaking into the footwell.

What else has gone on in the mean time -
I've also had my pre-cat removed by the guys over at @AKS - was a bit of a pain as one of the studs had snapped!
While I was there I also asked them to check my PCV and DV valves - both of which were pretty damn old so I got them changed too.
Oh I picked up some Millers Nanodrive and a filter too!

I also purchased an ITG Maxogen filter which I've actually just sold as its way too loud for my liking!

I've been over to R-tech and let @rtechniki (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1870)  work his magic and WOW - to say I'm impressed is a major understatement.

Things planned :
345mm brake upgrade : Purchased
Braided brake hoses : Awaiting delivery
Another intake...I'm aware they will all make noise but having had what is widely recognised as one of the loudest (ITG) hopefully the next will be quieter...
Some sort of suspension overhaul - My passenger shock is leaking like a mofo
Upgrade / renew the bushes - Not sure whether to go OEM or polybush as its my daily drive for now...
Some better tires as the current ditchfinders are crap! - but these can wait as they were replaced just before I got the car

I was also planning on getting highline clocks installed but cos of my older style MFSW I cant navigate through it. Many attempts were made with @RetroRaz (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=6494) and he's multiple clocks but it was in vain as I just couldn't get them to work off of my stalk!

Updated pics of the car / dyno graph / results to follow when I get home! - on the train as....

Unfortunately my GTI is in the garage again! @rtechniki (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1870) had mentioned the timing chain was rattling quiet badly and I had noticed it was sounding louder then a petrol should so I decided I'd get that changed before I suffered the same fate as @Peskyjones (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11854) and he's car. I'm hoping I will have it back tomorrow / Early Friday and get back to enjoying it again

I'm not so happy with it just now - Trust me! - but I figured I'm going to keep this car forever as I've invested more money into it then anybody else would be wiling to pay for it so I may as well spend a little more and get it running sweet.

I'm not sure yet to be honest - I'll find out when I get given the invoice on collection! :ashamed:

Get that leak sorted - remove the a-pillar trim and check the drainage pipe is still all connected!

I guess both our AXX cars were manufactured around the same time haha!

In all honesty though I'm not surprised / shocked at the maintenance needed especially at my mileage!

Happened to mine too. I wrote a how to somewhere on here.
Used the end off a Tec-7 tube to funnel the water from the sunroof

So I've just got back from my trusted mechanic! I've had the Timing chain & Tensioner replaced as previously mentioned on this thread.
Apparently it was well on its way out and I was lucky to have it changed when I did.

He also had to replace the Timing Chain cover with the Sprocket as it was knackered! So thats the shiny new bit (Behind the hpfp) in my engine bay at the moment (Pictured below)

Those of you who have a rough / diesel sounding idle when warm I'd advise you get yours checked / changed as well. It's made my car sound how a petrol engine should sound! I completely forgot how it sounds like as its gradually been creeping in. It feels like a new car!

So just to leave you with how my engine bay looked while I had the ITG with large filter on the car

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fp482%2Ffaz12321%2F20160617_192829_zpsfelymiwn.jpg&hash=02a4e363adc1348ef2208c5d89abb5d6a5de9c23)

I should hopefully have my new intake next week and will hopefully give the bay some much needed elbow grease cos it's filthy at the moment!

So I purchased some S3 brakes recently to improve my stopping power after my remap!

Obviously I couldn't have them looking the way they were so I had given them to a cousin who loves all these jobs!

Love the colour mate. Can't wait to see a few pics of it. Good idea upgrading the brakes you done a good job with them. I had a set of R32 front brakes on my old 2.0 TSI Scirocco. They certainly make the difference. Must look into getting an upgrade on them next... I'll post a few pics of my ed35 soon especially when I get your ITG fitted

Cheers mate! I'm gonna give it a wash sometime soon and then I'll probably take some fresh snaps! The brakes are what I hear a worthwhile upgrade - so should hopefully give me the additional stopping power for coping with the remap!

You should have got the ITG today :P get it on!!

Hey dude! I find the Revo quieter, but then again as @smyffalis (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=3417) would agree my ITG was REALLY loud with the bigger filter etc. From the small drive to check everything was working ok, it felt / sounded a lot better for my tastes.

22/02/2017

So I've been pretty quiet on the forum with regards to my car over the past few months. A few things have changed in that time.

The car passed it's MOT without a single advisory in January - Which surprised me considering it's about 11 years old now!

I then changed the oil with Quantum Platinum 5w40 (R-tech reccomend either Millers or the Quantum). Having had the Millers running in it previously I can't say I've noticed any difference in terms of performance or noise so happy days!I also changed the oil filter and the pollen filter - just to keep the air inside clean.

AP Coilovers were installed - I figured this'd give me some adjustment as I wasn't exactly sure how much I wanted to lower or even if I wanted to lower it at all. I didn't go for my initial preference of the Koni's fully adjustable as I decided I was never going to track my car so really didn't need the adjustment they offered.
I had them wound right down to the bottom for a short while before I decided I had enough of the scrapes and going REAL slow everywhere. I soon changed their height back to a more useable height where it is sat for now - much better and am able to actually use the car as a GTI again! :)

I also had the Powerflex ALK (Anti-lift kit) installed along with the engine mount and dogbone insert bush. This really has improved the handling and for the relativley little cost they have really bought the car to life!

I've also gone and had all 4 tyres replaced as they were all budget / ebay specials from when I had purchased them. I ended up going with Rainsport 3's after reading some reviews on various forums. I previously had Goodyear Eagle F1's on my previous GTI and if i'm completely honest - I can't say they are worth almost 2x the cost of the Rainsports - or maybe I just don't drive "hard" enough.

Today I just spent the past few hours replacing the front disc's and pads as I was beginning to get a bit of juddering which coincided with my brake pad warning light coming on.
I ended up getting 340mm TTS discs along with Brembo pads - From my initial drive since having fitted them they're pretty good and I haven't noticed any real difference in braking performance even though they are a little smaller.

I was hoping to replace the rear brake discs and pads too, but unfortunately I can't seem to get enough leverage on my drive to remove the caliper carrier (m14) bolts so I may have to give it to the garage in the coming week to get them done.

I've also wrapped my entire center console with a Carbon fibre look wrap - I think it really has freshened up the inside as it was beginning to look a little drab - or maybe it's just because it's been about 4 months since it's last wash  :ashamed:

I'm sure I've missed some little bits and bobs that I've probably done.

I'll have to give it a wash at some point over the coming week and will upload some pics afterwords!

So I gave it a much needed wash! I actually forgot how good this colour can actually look.

I gave it a coat of wax so hopefully it'll be staying cleaner this time!

So I've been suffering from a misfire recently. I gave it into my other trusted garage in Colchester (API Car repairs) as AKS was booked up until JULY! They've done a brilliant job and suspected the injectors much like a couple of the guys on the forum had told me too.

I left it with them for a week and opted to have them send the injectors of to Mr Injector for his services. I figured having them serviced was cheaper then buying 1 new injector so it was worth a go in the first instance. What service from Mr Injector - He had them turned around within a few days so I was well chuffed!

While it was at the garage just sat there, the lad suggested I should probably have the carbon cleaned - My god - it was certainly needed it as the pics show.

The chaps also managed to fix my "Knocking" sound while accelerating / braking. It turned out to be the bolts on my Powerflex Anti Lift Kit weren't tightened up when the kit was fitted. This makes complete sense as the sound has been present ever since the ALK was fitted. The car finally drives "quietly" and I can actually enjoy it again :)

I actually forgot how good it drove without the small niggles I've had recently :happy2:

Cheers guys - The car feels MUCH better now, it idles so quietly now & it actually feels more powerful. I'd definitely advise getting the valves cleaned - especially when you reach higher mileages  :happy2:
