Title: Rear End Creaking Like Mad - Where is it coming from? Help !!
Post by: GTI-Ross on August 19, 2014, 09:35:08 pm
I have pretty stiff roll bars (H&R 28mm /24mm) so the chassis is very stiff , but the back end when driving on uneven roads is really creaky, starting to really do my head in.

I have had a played around in the back seats and boot and nothing seems to move or creak when pushing or pulling the parts. I have taken the rear seats out and some interior trim parts and its still there. I have tightened the hinges  and sprayed with WD40 ( I have since been told that white grease would be better, which i will buy & try).

Im pretty sure it not the rubber seals as it more of a chassis creak / flexing of the car. I have since even dropped my ARB setting to soft to try reduce it but its still there. It doesnt seem to do it if i drive wit the boot open.

Can anyone point me in the right direction or where to check next. Do the rear shock top mount ever creak as i havent checked there? It kind of sounds like its coming from C pilars or boot lid.

Someone has also said it could be the drop links causing the flex and the sounds travels through the chassis and makes it sound like its inside the car, what the best product to lube the drop links?

Thanks guys...

Thanks

It's possible the noise is emanating from your arb bushes in which case lubricating them should sort out the creaking.

I'd go with the ARB bushes too as mentioned above. I've had to regrease mine 2 or 3 times now. The last time I just used a normal EP2 type grease which seems to be lasting a little longer.

Well ill give it ago, but its just seems its the bootlid which is creaking / flexing, but I guess it could stem from the ARB bushing.

PS: where can i get some EP2 grease, Ive never heard of it or used it.

Thanks for the link. It looks like it comes in a tube, do you use a silicone gun or something?

You don't need one. Normally you can just take the cap of and use your finger.

Check that the tailgate is not touching the top of the bumper when shut.

Bumper off,or at best very loose, pull bumper cover away as much as possible, fixed most of the way along the back panel is a plastic guide rail, just below the rubber hatchback seal, another guide channel on the inside of the bumper locates into the one on the rear panel, these can become dislodged, causing the top of the rear bumper to raise up and  catch the bottom of the tailgate when shut.

will try and get some piccys of some of the parts to give you an idea.
