Hi
I'm looking to upgrade to a DAB unit in my MY07 GTI with a sharkfin aerial - it has factory fitted telephone prep which presumably runs back to the aerial as I believe it's a differnt partnumber for GPS/telephone?. Any idea if I can use the aerial wire that goes from the telephone prep unit to the sharkfin aerial and use that for a suitable DAB aerial to avoid having to run a cable down the headlining etc). I don't use the telephone prep kit, and will be removing it...
What are my options to keep it OEM?
Thanks in advance

I don't think your shark fin will have DAB in it, so you need a new one that has everthing, or change to a standard looking polo DAB aerial which will be a lot cheaper. I think the fakra phone cable could be used its just different coloured connectors, but not sure...
like this

or you could look into the DAB hatchback set-up...
I fitted the polo one in mine and its great :drinking:

Thanks for your reply. Hopefully I can use the phone cable will save having to run a new cable down to the radio. I'll look into the Polo aerial - is that a bee-sting aerial?
Many thanks

Oh and do you have a part number for the polo aerial?
Thanks again.
-
I bought it used off someone on here, and didn't write the part number down...dooh
the polo base looks identical to standard golf base, bit boring, somehow they have squeezed in DAB circuits as well!! , you can fit any screw in antenna you want, yes the polo is more stubby and a different sized thread.
the vw dealer should be able to sort you out with part numbers, there are loads of different ones, bit of a nightmare...........

Hello, Toms85. Sure you can use the wire from the telephone prep unit. You will need a pigtail cable like this in both ends: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fakra-SMB-Z-5021-jack-to-plug-crimp-15cm-RG174-pigtail-cable-Neutral-coding-/221121539070?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item337bdeebfe. That cable is coding neutral (fakra Z), i.e. it will convert fakra D female (GSM) connector to a fakra A female (DAB) connector. However, as Paulw123 mentions you will probably need to replace your DAB aerial and for that you will have to drop the headlining anyway, at least partially.
I was doing the same retrofit not too long ago. Have a look: http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,84892.0.html

Thanks very much guys, just picked up a RCD 310 DAB so will report how I get on!

Does anyone know if the Polo aerial fits in place of a sharkfin as it looks smaller?
Thanks
-
good point, I would assume the hole is the same size, but it might leave a mark on the paint where the polo ariel footprint is smaller, but then it might clean up/tcut out....
If I was you I would go for the german ebay OEM shark fin one.

Thanks. I suppose I'm just being cheap and prefering to go for the cheaper option.. I might look under the sharkfin to see if it has left any marks before deciding
