Title: In Car Camera CCTV
Post by: rich83 on August 20, 2014, 11:16:13 am
Does any one use a camera in their cars all the time?

If so which one?

Are you talking about a dash cam?

I use the mini 0801 and I've gone through 3 different cams already looking for the best.

I love this one, quality is amazing and it's so small I fit it behind the rear view mirror so you can't actually see it.

It's also automatic recording so when I plug it into cigarette lighter it starts up and records automatically. Fantastic piece of kit and price is around £85.

Cable can be completely hidden and it runs on a continuous loop so no need to do anything with it ever.

You will need to update the firmware when you get it but it's easy to do.

I've had a dash cam fitted for a couple of months now.  I went for a Blackvue DR500GW after a recommendation from someone at work and an informative You Tube review.

This is the one I've got although I got mine from Amazon:

http://www.blackvue.co.uk/index.php/online-shop/blackvue-products/new-blackvue-dr500gw-hd-with-wi-fi-detail

I've connected it to the fuse box so I don't have the cable running to the cigarette lighter.  It starts recording onto a micro SD card as soon as I switch on the ignition and is on a continuos loop and overwrites once the card is full.  It's also wifi so can download the clips to your phone or watch a live view if you chose.

How did you go about this direct connection to fuse box?

Really would like to do it!

I use a dash cam, leave it plugged into 12v, records on movement.

Look on YouTube for footage, widely recognised as best bang for buck in the dash cam world!

Careful who you buy off, some are slower copies.

One of each of these:

Find a spare fuse way in the fuse box. Cut the croc clips off the cigarette lighter socket, connect red lead to the fuse piggyback thing and black wire to an earth point.  The fuse way I used was switched as I didn't want to use the parking mode on the camera.

Not be long before they're reading OBD, GPS and gyroscope for comprehensive evidence in the event of an accident

That's brilliant.

I'm sure a lot of people using phone chargers. dash cams etc. can benefit from this.

Have you considered a how to guide with photos?

Haha, I hadn't done. I can get some photos of it in the fusebox if you like.

I tried to upload a couple of photos of the camera in situ but even resizing the photos in photobucket they were coming out huge on here

That'd be much appreciated!

A full how to guide would definitely be a big hit on the forum though I imagine! I've just replaced my dv on a k03 and I noticed none of the guides had photos so I'm going to make one myself tomorrow!

I would also be really interested in a 'how to' guide. I guess the details would be the same on a mk7?

Here's how I installed my camera.

I fitted mine up behind the rear view mirror

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1210.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc406%2Fmb_007%2FIMG_2376.jpeg&hash=d97fb727a5fd7155d656eae30c0508f444a029c8)

I secured the power lead to the mirror stalk and pushed it under the head lining to the A pillar

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1210.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc406%2Fmb_007%2FIMG_2421.jpeg&hash=4dd65907d092e69bc8746a63520e98bf21c6325a)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1210.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc406%2Fmb_007%2FIMG_2422.jpeg&hash=78d6931370b4c4e615decc0c11da8c4e0d385685)

I then removed the A pillar trim (there's a screw behind the airbag tag and then just pull the trim off), and secured the power lead behind the airbag. No photo of that bit I'm afraid but once the trim is off you'll see where to cable tie it

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1210.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc406%2Fmb_007%2FIMG_2423.jpeg&hash=e33665139689bf645c92dd9533480e660d42f3e4)

Run the power lead into the fuse box on the drivers side

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1210.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc406%2Fmb_007%2FIMG_2424.jpeg&hash=af3195b11dd58b7962a75fa7f08eb11d2de444e5)

I didn't want to cut the plug off the end of the power lead so bought the socket I linked to previously. If using the same sort of thing then cut the red crocodile clip off and crimp the piggy back fuse holder to the wire

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1210.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc406%2Fmb_007%2FIMG_2425.jpeg&hash=e8b0a444cb70d242c2e995be073ca79e01a9e050)

Cut the black crocodile clip off and crimp a ring terminal on the wire and attach this to an earth point

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1210.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc406%2Fmb_007%2FIMG_2426.jpeg&hash=630a8f7d1b69b40a8b245f0c7a9dcaa015a261e4)

I connected the piggy back fuse holder to a spare switched fuse way and fitted a 2A fuse

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1210.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc406%2Fmb_007%2FIMG_2428.jpeg&hash=c2d4434ea37b4795b4ba97122d9769665880b08b)

I then just tidied everything up

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1210.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc406%2Fmb_007%2FIMG_2429.jpeg&hash=88a64c5a1879b0d64780ef0712a4a14c1dde4fe6)

Hope this helps. Any questions then just ask away.

I'm guessing it would be very similar on a MK7 but I've never been in one so can't say for sure.

I've printed it off and will order parts today!

Nice one!
Apart from the dash cam, crimpers and terminals is there anything else required?

Just ordered one off eBay, turns out the bloke loved down the road so has just dropped it off.
Now mine has 3 wires, live, switched live and earth.

Can I put the lives into fuses that are the same, so put the live cable I'm and push a live fuse in to hold it in?

Here's what my wires look like.

If it needs a switched supply & a permanent supply you need to fuse them separately. The permanent supply will be for parking mode I would think. I wasn't worried about that which is why I connected it to a switched supply. Bear in mind that if it's recording/monitoring while parked it will be draining the battery. I have seen a little box of electronics you can buy that switches the camera off if the battery reaches a certain level so won't drain it completely

The add said the perm. Live was required as it doesn't have an internal battery.
I only want it recording when I'm driving so can i just ignore that live then?

I'm slightly lost here.

Bring dash cam power cable down to fuse box ok. What do I do with the existing dash cam connection point? i.e. how do I connect it to the enw AUX leads and piggback?

If you have the same cigarette lighter socket that I got, it will fit next to the fuse box so the dash cam power lead can plug into it. Its shown all connected in the last photo.

The camera stays permanently connected to the socket so will start recording as soon as you switch the ignition on

It's like having a cigarette lighter/12v power socket in the fuse box cubby hole
