Title: Mk5 GTI loud engine.
Post by: Dub-Jon on August 26, 2014, 10:33:00 am
Hi Guys,  i have a mk5 gti, but the engine is so loud it sounds like a diesel.  just sounds very taperty and is very annoying.  There is no loss in power at all just this noise is hideous.
i have been told it might be the timeing chain and the cog.  is this right? has anyone else had this before?   want to get it fixed ASAP now.  I ve been quoted £400 for the cog and £110 for the chain. then labour on top of this so it seams a very expensive job.  Any 1 else had this?

Thanks

Jon

Do a search - most of the GTIs sound annoyingly tappety !
It's most likely the HPFP - they (nearly) all do it and you learn to live with it.

If it's clattery  rattle sound - could be the timing chain. I think that is pretty rare though.

Hello

I asked this question a couple of weeks ago and if the noise is from the front right (looking at the engine from the front of the car) then what the garage have said is probably correct and the price is about right but have a look about to see if you can get it cheaper.

Hope this helps a little.

Regards

You might be lucky and just need to replace the chain and tensioner. I've ordered all the bits needed for this apart from the camshaft adjuster. I will see what the one on there is like if it is worn i will replace it.

Timing chain will be alot noisier when car  is up to full temperature. Let it idle you should hear it rattle/grauncy sounding.

They do sound tappety standard but thats the injectors and what not

Hey guys I've had this problem on my car and had it fixed. I had the chain and tensioner done first time round and still had the same noise then had the adjuster done and was all fixed it cost me a total of £730 for the work but I had to pay labour twice lol. As with regards to the cam adjuster to look at it you won't be able to tel if it's broke, its regulated by oil pressure and it's the mechanism inside that's at fault. I'm so glad I've got this fixed now, I told another chap that lives up the road from me who had the same issue and he said he wasn't prepared to pay the money to get a rattle fixed. More fool him as within 3 months the chain had snapped and is still sourcing a replacement engine as it took the engine out in the process!!! Not saying that this will happen to every car but I think this issue justifies the money spent on it to fix. Hope this helps. I know a really good garage in ruby who has done a few of these now if any one is near to them I'd be happy to give you there details. Sam

I've got all the bits apart from the adjustor so there is no way to tell if its faulty?

I don't think so the garage that did mine showed me the new one against the old one before he put it back together and the only difference between the two was oil on the old one and different part different part numbers as the new one is a updated part.
