Finally got the tyres mounted on my new wheels.
As i'm running 225 45 R17 on my stock wheels which are 7.5 inches wide.
I thought i would run the same size tyre on the new wheels which are 8 inches wide.
I went with Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 225/45 R17 94y XL with rim protection.
Here a few pics i know i need more low. But they seem massive i'm sure the tyres that are on my stock wheels would look much better than these.
On the up side they do have a smoother ride.
The main problem is how much they stick over the rims.
So my question is what to do now?
1. Take them off with less than 5 miles on and try and sell them.
2. Just live with it.
What tyres should i have bought?

I'm afraid i can't help you bud but if you choose to keep them i'd be tempted to paint BF GOODRICH in white lettering on the tyre walls!
On a more serious note i hope someone can help you get it sorted :happy2:
-
Thanks mate you made me smile for a second :sad1:
I'm pretty upset with my self i spent ages reading reviews/post etc and my car has turned into a 4X4.
The tyres on my stock wheels look great and they are the same size. But maybe the thinner rim xl and rim protection have fuc*ed it.
-
Tyres are coming off tomorrow going to try and mount one of the tyres of my stock wheels and see how they look. They are cheap Chinese tyres very noisy really wanted to try something better.
Before i waste any more time and money on these wheels how about this clearance? I do have brand new discs and pads so in theory things can only get better?

:signLOL: I was just thinking the same thing, sorry mate :happy2:
-
Brake wear will hardly affect that clearance anytime soon. I fitted stock sized tyres on my alloys and have the same sort of sidewall poke but I like it.

Thanks for your input. Is this clearance safe?
What size tyres would people usually run on a 17x8 wheel?

Sell the wheels and get something better!
That brake clearance is crazy :rolleye:

I might just sell them and stick with my curbed monza alloys. I'm not having much luck with this stuff.

Good decision. Those rims are hideous.
-
i quite like futuras its a pity they are not 18inch
-
To keep that rims you need a stretch tyre look, maybe a 215 40 17 tyre, then lower it, try and see if some one can photoshop it for you to give you an idea before hand.
-
Just my opinion but don't like the wheels to be honest? Tyre's are fine wheels no
-
A small drop was my next project. Just worried about the brake clearance.
-
This might work:
Bring nasty looking wheels to council tip.
Sell tyres and Monzas.
Buy these http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,84270.0.html
Fit the correct tyres
Lower a wee bit with good springs.
-
Its the style of wheel vs standard height. Even a small drop wont improve things!
-
The biggest problem is that the wheels are too small, the fact that they are splits emphasises this and makes the tyres look like balloons.
-
Going to put the eagle f1's on my stock monzas hopefully they will look ok on them.
I was trying to stick with the tyre and wheel spec on my log book. Will fail the mot otherwise. Suppose i will have to keep the stock alloys for the mot and look for some 18's
-
You wont fail an mot
-
You will in Spain mate. The tyre spec is on the log book. You can pay about €300 to add a different spec wheel/tyre within their specifications. I doubt you can sun much of a stretch.
I've been wanting to get rid of the Chinese tyres that were on the car when i bought it. They are very noisy and not good in the wet. Hopefully the goodyears will be an improvement.
-
Ahhhhhh, sorry, thought you were uk based!
-
You don't see many modified cars here. Supposedly they mot is a PITA if you are modified.
-
What happens when you put fancy wherls on your car without lowering it!!!
