Evening guys,
Right, I am looking to do a BBK on my mk5 gti. I have been researching different brake upgrades, methods and kits for the past 2 weeks now and my head is banging! :signLOL:
At first I was looking to do the S3 8P 345mm upgrade which I actually went and purchased, I then done a few shows over in Belgium and have now decided I need bigger! Not quite a fan of the TT RS option so thats out the window. I am now thinking about a Porsche Cayenne 6 Pot front upgrade.
I think this is what I need, as I said I have done a lot of research but found a lot of mixed information....
- Porsche Cayenne 6 Pot front calipers
- Mercedes 350mm discs
- Porsche to Volkswagen brake lines
- Porsche Cayenne brake pads
- Mounting bolts
I have read that the 350mm oem disks are very heavy but priced at £150 for pagid drilled discs > Are there any options for lighter discs that don't cost the earth?
I know that these also need the bolt holes opening up slightly & will need centre rings because of the centre bore?
Mounting bolts I can get for £55 > Is this priced ok?
Now I have seen the famous DaveB's input on loadssssssssss of threads but he is a very very busy man and near impossible to get a hold of. I have read that he can supply oem 350mm discs with the bolt holes already drilled etc for £203 + vat. I have also read he can supply different discs which may be better suited for the setup?
Any real input would be great so I can finally get some solid facts down and get the ball rolling with my upgrade! :happy2: :happy2: :happy2:
Thanks in advance guys!

The Porsche cayenne calipers aren't very good on our cars.
Look at the Porsche 996turbo 4 pot calipers with the 350mm merc discs :happy2:

Serious mate? May I ask why that is?
Cheers for the 4 pot link! May have to look into that :happy2:

Queue Dr friction, Dave! :popcornsoda:

Probably to do with piston sizes.
Bare in mind the 6pots are twice as heavy as the ttrs/db9 caliper. :innocent:
-
The greater surface area of the big cayenne calipers don't make for a good pedal feel / response. Don't think our master cylinders are matched well with them.

As I suspected.... there are a few variations...
Brembo 6 pot 17Z - pistons 34/36/38 = ~ 6000mm2
Brembo 6 pot 18Z - pistons 30/34/38 = ~ 5500mm2
Brembo 6 pot 19Z - pistons 32/36/38 = ~ 5900mm2
vs the ~5550mm2 of the TTRS/DB9.... so id say you need to 18Z caliper and avoid the other 2 version.

That's the one I was going to go for mate, the 18z calipers but not sure with above comments from mike :)

Depends what you want out of them I suppose. If you want them for show then crack on.... if you want some really really good brakes that will stop you ever time then there are probably better solutions.... depends on your budget.

18z brembos work perfectly fine on my ed30 mate, pedal feels good and works fine with std master cylinder. I used caddy 2k rear calipers but would work much better with R32/S3 vented rears.

Ignore me I'm just regurgitating what I've read read on here in the past, I know better than to believe everything I read. Sorry to confuse things :happy2:

Cheers dude, they will be for show mostly but will be for an upgrade performance wise too! :happy2:

Cheers mate! Are they 350mm Zimmerman discs or 330mm's?

Merc ML350 350mm discs. (Zimmerman)

996 Turbo 4 pots are a great performance caliper if it's not for show.
