Title: DSG model showing as Manual on HPI Check?
Post by: Golf_GT_TDI on September 05, 2014, 12:45:37 pm
Hi,
There is a 2007 Golf GT TDI 170 I'm interested in going to view, it has DSG but on the HPI check I did (it came back all clear) it is listed as Manual rather than Auto, is that right? Not had a DSG before.
Thanks

I assume that because you have the paddles on the steering wheel its not considered and out and out automatic (I.e. you'd need a manual licence to drive one?)

I'm not sure, I could be talking complete twaddle but a lot of DSG's on Autotrader are listed as manuals.

Thanks for the reply, fair point about the paddles but I'm thinking the absense of clutch pedal should class it as Auto. I have a licence to drive a manual so it's not a problem in that regard, might try phone DVLA.

My old Scirocco showed as auto on the v5 logbook and my insurance thought it was an auto too. Just someone inputting the vehicles details wrong. Doubt it's anything to worry about  :happy2:

No plate changes recorded.
Right just off phone from DVLA, chap I spoke to said car history check services source their information from various means and said that it could be generic manufacturer info or error in that regard. He said DVLA records don't hold transmission info on vehicle details so couldn't confirm that for me. So I THINK it's nothing to worry about, all the rest of check came back fine like I say just thought it a bit wierd when I saw 6 speed manual listed.

Next step insurance quote, see if it comes up as Automatic.
Thanks guys.

Thanks, yeah I was sure the V5's had it but just checked the V5C for my 2003 Golf and can't see transmission info listed.

My car does that on certain databases. Nothing to worry about whatsoever.

My car is a DSG and also came up as a manual when I ran the HPI check. I called HPI and they weren't concerned, though suggested that I ask the owner to phone them and request to have it changed before buying the car. You may well find the HPI is invalidated if the basic car details are incorrect.

As regards insurance, make sure the insurer is aware the car is a dsg. I got some quotes, before the HPI details were changed when my car was still showing as a manual. The insurers seem to use the similar data to HPI and initially quoted me on a manual. When I double checked they confirmed that their manual policies didn't cover DSG cars. I also found that DSG premiums were a tad higher. Double check with your insurer to make sure you don't inadvertently end up breaching your policy.  Otherwise you may well find they refuse a pay out in case of an accident.
