Title: Worry or Not
Post by: numec on September 07, 2014, 10:23:00 am
Hi guys, is it something dodgy if the engine code is not listed in the V5? and found a sticker on the side of AAX. I thought 2007 model should be BWA?

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fy494%2Fnumec%2F20140904_172508_zpseifxwf16.jpg&hash=e30ebe5e1ce114489b7afa58c6e8a08c65c33a64)

possible an import GTI?
lovely spec though

Mines an early 2006 with the BWA engine

The only 2007s with the AXX engine will be the imported GTIs that got brought over from Dubai by the likes of Motorpoint. These cars were actually 2005 build but sat around unsold in storage for a couple of years before getting registered on 07-plates. Check the 10th digit of the VIN to identify it's model year

yeah but the VIN says it was built in 2006?
I will contact VW first thing on Monday to verify. 1 out few of I viewed last time was imported from UAE but has no service history.

After some digging, have a feeling this is an import..electric seat for driver and no engine code in V5 document..buy or no buy..hmm

If it's an import it's worth less than a uk car. You may also have difficulty selling in future.

The BWA is a better engine too (from a durability perspective), so I'd walk away and find a well looked after, straight, UK vehicle  :happy2:

Is this really true with a seven year old car that's well out of warrantee?

It shows up on an HPI report, and the fact that it has differing spec from a UK car it's the sort of thing that raises concern. My mate unknowingly bought an Import Civic Type-R (not a JDM import). His insurance was a bit higher (security system not as good), and he struggled to sell it after.

Personally I wouldn't buy an import. . . :scared:

well this one doesnt show anything from the HPI check (strange there) even in the V5 states it was manufactured in 2007 (clearly stated in VIN is 2006 built model)..and this is not the 1st which I found..the only way I knew was by calling VW and they can tell you based on their database..

I personally wouldn't buy a car that has VIN and engine number discrepancies. You're worried now, think how a future buyer might be... Unless like me you don't care about selling you car as you have no intention to (stand fast a decent priced Golf R20 popes up for sale).

When looking for one I came across an import, what drew me to that was the spec was a bit random and the service manual (gen vw one) was in German..

Spoke to my mate at vw, who ran the plates and could only come back.. Colour and model.. And said it must be an import as they didn't have any more info than that..

I said does that mean I should walk away from it...

He said these days imports are quite common, if the price is right for you then there's no reason to not have it..

If it's well looked after and the right spec and price then it could be the one...

I DID walk away from this import... It was a dog in the flesh.!!!

My car was originally from Saudi.
The only spec difference was that I got electric drivers seat (fully electric).  Why raise concern on a non-issue.
My GTI was also about £80 a year cheaper to insure than another silver one I was looking at, which even made the guy at Brentacre have to double check because it was odd.
It was imported before first registration, as such does not show up as an import on HPI check. It's not a "UK" car but that's only because it wasn't brought it through VW UK.

I agree there are other cases of imported vehicles however there are a lot of cars which were "as new imports" via various groups, especially for army servicemen and women, it's really not a problem... lol.
