As you can see from the pictures below my drive is a nightmare, I can just get it out with the ramp I made without the spitter touching. I have reinforced the ramp now and it is much stronger however I think I will soon get sick of having to get out every morning so it looks like standard springs are going to be going back on.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frr112%2Ftrials_samuk%2FIMG_5034.jpg&hash=2b731336cad79aeef2db092bade36ec5ff83cc59)

Got myself a downpipe which is now fitted and sounds great!
Mods wise thats it for now, I am just going to keep it clean and start adding some miles to the clock! I think maybe at some point next year I may look into going stage 2 but for now it is plenty fast enough for me :D
Look forward to hearing some feedback (most of you will have seen this before on here!) and I am sure I will meet some of you at meets/shows
Cheers

Its a right pain, like i say I can now get it out with the ramp I made. When I picked the car up I got it home then discovered I couldn't get back out again without reversing down!
It looks great with the H&R's on but its not practical at all for me to be getting out every morning to leave my house!

Stunning car :happy2:

Hi all,
I wouldn't say this is going to be a build thread as the previous owners have already modified the car with brilliant taste and there is nothing really that I would change with it!
I have recently fitted a down pipe and I plan on going for a stage 2 map at R-tech at some point next year, other than that the car stands as I bought it.
I have a set of refurbed S3 brakes with braided lines to go on at some point, will be running standard pads until I get my map done then will be looking at new pads (suggestions would be great!)
Recently I have been looking at cold air induction kits but it seems a bit silly spending the money on one when the one Jake made is halfway there so I decided to start bit of a project and make my own cold airbox/heatsheild. I have access to sheet metal facilities at work so I have been wolfing my lunch down and working on this!
This is how the engine bay looked before I started this.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frr112%2Ftrials_samuk%2FIMG_5062.jpg&hash=93cbfb048242404f23326c0cfeb19d93e4ff2d06)
So basically with nothing really to work from I just gave the engine bay a good coat of looking at and started roughly measuring up for the idea that I had in my head and sketching it out. It made sense to keep as much hot air in the bay away from the filter and give it as much cold air as possible.
I then got some sheets of cardboard and made a model of the plan which I could then modify to give me a more precise set of measurements.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frr112%2Ftrials_samuk%2FIMG_5066.jpg&hash=542d394e551d20c303bb744a2aed8693af5eef66)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frr112%2Ftrials_samuk%2FIMG_5068.jpg&hash=b55ed4ac8f9be0d7c9a5772f2bae3f15ed544338)
Once I had the templates cut out I taped them together and sat the model into place to give me an idea of size and what modifications I needed to make to the design, I had to trim it slightly but it fit pretty well.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frr112%2Ftrials_samuk%2FIMG_5065.jpg&hash=dcccd8b55ea3e65036cd8f6cd241c2175d3ef723)
Once I was happy with the model I took some more precise measurements and set to on the drawing board and drew up a proper design I could work from, don't get me wrong I know measuring from cardboard isn't the most professional way of doing it but its all I could work from and i'm no professional!
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frr112%2Ftrials_samuk%2FIMG_4859.jpg&hash=97e75324591a0bdcbde97cc76b10ab78e7905ebc)
Once I had the finished drawings I found a decent sized piece of scrap sheet Aluminium at work and brought it home to mark out.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frr112%2Ftrials_samuk%2FIMG_5074.jpg&hash=5bfd48bfc7ce9cd7a0e9c1c9f9b59e18a5dadaef)
Once I had marked the plan out I also cut the hole out with a 92mm hole saw (the hole is 105mm so I had a bit of filing to do!)
Another lunch time at work later and I had cut out the plans, I did most of this on the guillotine however for some areas I used a power cropper and again a lot of filing.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frr112%2Ftrials_samuk%2FIMG_5075.jpg&hash=dd207a903b37bcbea37631cc8874128d603a83ac)
The next day I bent the components using the box&pan folder and a small manual press brake. This was when i had my first problem, due to the metal being scrap from the stretch forming process where I work it had work hardened slightly and the small tabs snapped of when I bent them up, this was bit of a pain but I will find away around it when it comes to fitting it. Here is a pic of the two components sat in place in the engine bay.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frr112%2Ftrials_samuk%2FIMG_5080.jpg&hash=d978d821261485cb84676d217e8c5d26a0fb7487)
I will update this when I have time, I don't really know how its going to turn out but there is no harm in trying and it will be good to have something of my own on the car.
Feedback and advice would be great :happy2:
Cheers
Sam

very nice mate! :happy2:

Looks great, you've some good metalwork skills there

Great Work!

Bit of an update, took my bits to get welded and got them back the other day which cost me £15. Forgot to mention that I made a mount for one of the aluminium pipes to give it bit more of a solid mounting on a bracket on the side of the engine.
I also made a heat shield which locates above the downpipe which hopefully will hold off some of the heat.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frr112%2Ftrials_samuk%2FIMG_4850.jpg&hash=f7cddfd886314e8912eb3c97b98d45fde836e94b)

I cleaned all the welds up then etched and painted the parts (the paint cost me £15)

The trim turned up in the post today, I ordered 2m but they sent me 70cm :stupid: so I don't quite have enough yet but I sent them an email giving them my best so hopefully I should receive some more soon.
So this is the stage I am at now, just waiting on a reply from the trim/seal place but this wont stop me installing the system which hopefully I will be able to do this weekend

Couldnt find any anywhere online in the UK and did plenty of trawling! Ended up getting it off amazon from Eygpt, or their website - rubbersealmarket.com however I wouldn't recommend them from my experience.

Cheers mate, I am quite pleased with how its turned out so far, quite satisfying adding something of my own to this awesome car and I am saving money!

I have reinforced the wooden one and it is much stronger now. However I have decided to put standard springs on anyway at least over the winter period.

Still waiting for my trim from Eygpt :fighting: soon as that arrives then the system can be installed, I will upload the rest of the pics when I have finished it.
Quick wash today and took a couple of snaps - then it rained :sad1:

Finally got the trim from Eygpt so I have been able to finish my heatsheild/ airbox
I covered the underside of the downpipe heatsheild with tin foil and stuck it on with high temp silicone, hopefully this will reflect the heat as much as possible (I hope!)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frr112%2Ftrials_samuk%2FIMG_4884.jpg&hash=cea89f702548e504eb02d82da1ab87955d1aea6d)

And here it is fitted to the car
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frr112%2Ftrials_samuk%2FIMG_4886.jpg&hash=abeeff99f56637caaf1d3b4eccc7164ae615e019)
I put the rest of the trim onto the airbox this evening and fitted the rest of the system.

Must admit I am pretty happy with the outcome saying I started with bits of cardboard and didn't really know what I was doing!
Feedback would be great!
Cheers
Sam
-
Very neat job. Have you logged the IAT before and after ?
-
No unfortunately not, I didn't think to to be honest, I just got carried away with the fabrication! I am sure there will be a small difference in temp but I cant see the work I have done making a huge difference. Painting it black wont have helped keeping the temp down but it definitely pleases the eye!
Cheers
Sam

It's probably more of a benefit in the summer through slow traffic, where it should prevent some of the hot air being drawn into the intake. Still looks lush though :happy2:
-
Can see intake temp on the Polafis, ;)

So there is! I haven't really played around with that much!

I love how it sit on the H&R springs I was leaning towards the Eibach Sport-lines but have now changed my mind.
I know you've put your standard springs back due to your steep drive but personally I would of moved house. :signLOL:
Are you on standards shocks if so what milage are you on, I'm on 46k and just wondering if I need to change the shocks I would rather not to keep costs down but I'd like to know if I need too?
Thanks

I know it looked so much better but getting out and putting a ramp there every morning through winter is far from ideal! I might put them back on come spring :happy2:
Mine is nearly on 60k and they seem fine, I am no mechanic but the way I see it there is no point in fixing something that isn't broken?! I may be corrected by a more knowledgable member but if I was you id just leave them until you get symptoms that they need replacing.

Yes see your point as long as it doesn't feel bouncy or anything - love the car a lot!
-
I wouldn't say it felt bouncy, I am far from used to the car yet and how it handles + power delivery so I havent pushed it yet. Someone said to me the other day that the car seemed a bit high for an ED30 which is making me think that the standard springs that came with it are actually standard GTI spring, as i understand the ED30's sit 15mm lower than the standard GTI?
Here is a pic of the car, comments would be great!

I'm pretty sure the GTI/Ed30 use the same suspension system

Yeah I don't think it sits that high, before I bought my GTI, I looked at an ED30 and it sat about the same height as yours.

want this car!!
-
Not updated in a while as nothing has really changed with the car, now that christmas is out of the way I can concentrate on more mods
The car is in at VW for a major service on Tuesday. I was undecided on how important the service stamp was from the main dealer but the car has FVWSH so I bit the bullet and booked it in. I asked the woman on the phone if they could check the cam follower for me and she had no idea what I was talking about so I am definitely going to speak to the technician working on my car! DSG is 40k of a service due to the recent problem and strip down I had with it.
Future Plans:
S3 brakes to go on (I'm thinking DS2500's or Pagids? Any advice on that would be great!)
RS4 FPRV
HPFP or Internals
R-tech custom stage 2+ progressive remap
Wheel alignment
USB charge port
Mk6 Climatronic unit and surround
Another cold air feed to the filter - I don't know whether to keep it OEM and try hide the duct behind an open fog grill which I don't have or put a hole in the one I have and put in an inlet ducting funnel? However a Saxo came past me the other day with one and it put me right off!
How fast the Mods come is all fund dependant but I always get excited on pay day so hopefully soon :jumpmove:
Induction snapped off my engine which was bit of a bummer but it was great to see a design flaw and find a solution so I set to on the lathe and here is mount mk2 :happy2: Just needs a lick of paint, or I think i'm going to wrap it with some protective heat reflective tape.

Went for a great thrash out up to North Yorkshire a couple of weeks ago with my friend and his E92. Was a really good day out and there are some enjoyable roads up there. Obviously he was faster than me but I think when my future mods are on he will definitely have something to worry about! I love how capable my car is against the likes of his!
Here are a few SLR pics from the day out, so much salt on the roads so the cars were filthy! I am in no way a photographer I just put it on auto and point and shot :happy2:

Thank you for looking and your views on brake pads and the induction feed would be great :innocent:

Thanks man, like I say I have no idea what I'm doing with the camera, its my friends and it the first time I've had a go with one! I'm sure the pics would benefit from a bit of editing but they are just straight of the camera.

great looking car. Shame you had to raise it but having gone from a super low van to a regular height one.. its such a novelty not scraping on every camber or bump :)
-
Love this car, the latest pics in Yorkshire look great!

Thanks for the feedback guys!

Agreed, the car did look to much better before but it just wasn't practical. I went for a drive the other day and hit a small bump under hard braking and something touched then and that's standard!
Car went in for service today. Dropped it off last night and was pleased to see my courtesy car was a brand fire new Mk7 Tdi. It is a very nice car however the dash creaks and it just doesn't feel as well made as my Mk5. Must admit, I do kinda miss driving a manual though!
Autotech HPFP should be with me today, will be a while before I visit R-tech but I'm getting there with the mods I needs

just bought a TR 3dr manual :happy2:

Ahhh good mate, glad you found one :happy2:

Snow has been eventful so far, to be fair it's not doing to bad. Your never gonna get the control as you do with a manual but I haven't got fully stuck yet and I'd say there was a good 4" around me.

Having to park half a mile away from my house is far from ideal aswell :fighting:

Evening all!
Haven't updated in a while so I thought it was time to show you what I've been up to!
Had some great fun in the car over the winter, I was dreading the snow with the DSG but i was actually really surprised how well it did! I got properly stuck once (bear in mind I ran Eagle f1's through winter) and 5 mins of digging and it was out!
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frr112%2Ftrials_samuk%2FIMG_5198.jpg&hash=2d8c60b8e11d629e84f6c038c1af09d9cb47b8df)
The back offside tyre was more worn than the other side so I replaced the axle with Eagle f1's
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frr112%2Ftrials_samuk%2FIMG_5315.jpg&hash=967499cb090dabd1c1e5d6920bc631ca519b322e)
Last week I replaced the fronts with Michelin Pilot Super Sports which I am over the moon with! Noticeable improvement and from what ive read and heard they are supposed to last longer than the Eagle f1's aswell so its a win win
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frr112%2Ftrials_samuk%2FIMG_5820.jpg&hash=6b91eaed7dfcc004f4d4a9e13896f0883c777bc9)
At the beginning of the year the year I put my S3 brakes on which have given me a bit more confidence. Running standard S3 pads and again a noticeable improvement. Not 100% sure what my plan with brakes is yet, fund dependant I will be going for a bigger, lighter set up along with alloy hubs and lower arms.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frr112%2Ftrials_samuk%2FIMG_5516.jpg&hash=024d5c13db2a8af6057dd850d8ab819ac202c5ea)
Finally, over the last couple of weeks I have been building my own 3" Stainless exhaust system. I wanted the car to sound great when I wanted it to but I didn't want it to be intrusive. So I designed a stepper motor actuated valved system which allowed me to more or less adjust the tone of the exhaust.
First thing to arrive was the valve which I got from California, as you can see it was integrated into a stainless section which I didn't end up using.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frr112%2Ftrials_samuk%2FIMG_5533.jpg&hash=31606a2245ccdd5930e213389d0523c36f0d54d4)

Next up was the silencer and muffler which I got from Demon tweeks.
Silencer: Jetex/Simons 250mm 3"
Muffler: Flowmaster Pro Race 50 series 3"
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frr112%2Ftrials_samuk%2FIMG_5725.jpg&hash=f885186e13a121646f7f60394ccb74dd6101739d)
I then went to a stainless steel suppliers and bought a load of 3" tube and bends. I had already drawn up the design so next thing was to make a cardboard template, the design changed slightly from what is pictured.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frr112%2Ftrials_samuk%2FIMG_5711.jpg&hash=a2260565882be91897c8b0480b28411a67d953a6)
Once I was happy everything was right I cut all the tube to size and tacked it all together. (to all you weld nerds I am well aware my welds are terrible but it is my first attempt and I was welding stainless with MIG! :ashamed:)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frr112%2Ftrials_samuk%2FD7746A61-0347-46AD-9B0F-9ED59883178B.jpg&hash=083fa14aaad51d434323fbebb2f3ee0e7181b5ba)
Here is the system fully welded, the orientation of the valve changed to allow room for a hanger.

and a shot of it positioned under the car

The hangers were then tacked on and it was fully welded up.
The switch was installed in the ashtray and the wire was routed to the back and through the wheel well with a gromet and silicone.

Here is the system installed, Please note it is not fully finished yet. I am undecided on what the plan is for the exit, im going to set a poll up and see what you guys think.
4" single exit (modified r32 bumper)
Twin 3" exits (modified r32 bumper)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frr112%2Ftrials_samuk%2F567BC63C-C33E-4810-90F8-EA0101F6D05D.jpg&hash=003055e663f2fedecf37f15c782ef588aa1f34e9)
It sounds insane with the valve open (silly loud rally car style ) and when its shut when on WOT I would say its quieter than the standard pipe, a lot of turbo noise though.
Hope you like the mods so far. RS4 FPRV should be here shortly then I will be going stage 2+ at some point.
Here are some local pics of the car

Fantastic work! Had recently discovered those exhaust valves online not many about in the UK, great would love to hear a video when all sorted :drinking:

Thanks mate :D, Yeah I couldnt find one anywhere, im sure they are about though. It took 4 weeks to come and I had to pay £30 import tax! :fighting:
-
Exhaust looks really good, can't wait to hear some videos! I have thought about doing something similar for a while.
How much did the exhaust cost you overall?
-
Love the exhaust. I bought a mig welder a couple of weeks ago. Any tips for a fellow newbie welder?

What gas have you bought with it? I used argasheild. If I was to give you any tips at all it would be to take your time setting your welder up... power, wire feed rate, gas rate etc. just cut some off cuts and have a play about. Oh, and have a grinder on standby to grind off your bird sh*te
-
I was lame went for a no-gas mig welder. Plus think i would struggle to get the gas out here.

I couldn't comment on that really as I don't know how they would work? I know I ran out of gas half way through and it made a right mess!
-
The MIG wire has a flux core which forms the shield around the weld to keep oxygen out.
The shield SLAG will need to be brushed off with a wire brush or chipped off with a hammer. The flux will cause some splatter i bought some anti splatter spray which should help to keep things tidy.
Did you build a welding table?

Ahhh interesting, I haven't heard of that before! Hope it goes to plan for you! No I did not build a welding table, I just tacked it all together then progressively welded it up with short runs to avoid it warping from the heat.

Have you got any videos of the exhaust?

The exhaust is off at the moment. I have machined my own valves and I am now putting two valves on to improve flow and noise. I will update with pics once I have have finished, and get you a vid of the sound.
-
Love this car! It looks so good, I can't believe those springs were just a 15mm drop though!
-
I have now plastic welded/fiber glassed and filled the valance and bumper, they are at the body shop getting sprayed, hopefully have them back on Friday.
Exhaust is fully welded up and the valve linkage is set up with the stepper motor. Reed switch is yet to be installed, will hopefully have that done by Wednesday along with routing the wires and installing the LED.
Next weekend will be fitting the bumper, welding on the hangers and the tip. Still undecided whether to go straight cut or slash cut
-
Id go slashed twin tips.
Your build is tempting me to fit an exhaust valve too. going to non res my current system and if its too loud to bear with then Ill fit valve to get the best of both worlds.
Keep up the good work :)

Its going to be single 4" exit, think i'm going to go with straight cut.... race car!
I cant wait to see what the twin valves sound like, should be a big improvement from the previous design.

I see... will still be great!! Also would like to see/hear some clips of the exhaust too when its ready pretty please

I'll put some pics up when its done. :happy2:

It's great to see the car still in enthusiast's hands. :happy2: I wasnt aware that Jake sold it. I still have the set of DS2500's I ran when I had S3 brakes fitted. There's only about 5k miles on them.

Would be interested to see a full picture of the rear of your eddy with the single exit exhaust :happy2: Looks great from close up shots you've taken. Bet it sounds the bollocks when the valve is open :happy2: :driver:
