As above... please vote. :happy2:

Yes but in the past I have found it so poor that I prefer to do google searches of the site. If it was made better (even having a custom google search built in) I'd use it more.

We are going to try and work on that. :happy2:
We would rather have the search function local rather than google as it always looks a mess (even though yes it is the best)

Have to agree. If I write a topic say "handle replacement" or whatever and then want to return to it later I should just be able to type in "handle replacement" in the search and it be the top hit, but instead it's gone forever and you need to search through hundreds of posts.
If you could update the search to priorities the areas that you have created or commented in to show first.
Also it seems like the search button treats both the title and the contents of a post the same. If I search "door window change" I should get a search with the topic most related to "door window change" but instead I will get a post with those words used more often. Subject title should be given priority over contents.

Every time I need to search for DV or GTI I use both forms of search.
Even better though just start a new thread and everyone will supply the info and it saves searching...

Thats when you would use advance search...

No, I just google it and it directs me here. Tapatalk is sh*te for searches I find. Oh and I can't vote with it either...
-
Yeah I google it also
-
Usually try on here first and then (of no lick) i google it only to be returned here to the exact thread I was looking for in the first place.
-
I tried doing a search last night for some Idle issues my car was having and it didn't really work. So I did as the others have said and googled it instead, came back to the forum with the results and found what I was looking for!
So it could be better, but it is the first time I haven't found what I was looking for with the search.
-
I use advanced mainly because Normal brings up too many very old threads and its too vague!
-
Only if i need the most recent rev dv :drinking:

Thanks for your input.
I am trying (on the test forum) to re-build a search index to see if it makes any difference.
-
Thanks for all the work you do on here. It really is appreciated by the silent majority.
Sorry about the odd one...

Hear hear!

I do try with the search on pc and tapatalk on the phone and the search is pretty crap at present. All it seems to do is pull a few from recent years and then goes back to 2008 and 2009 but what you want doesn't show up even tho what you have searched for is contained within a post or thread title.

I use the search function. Sometimes it works... sometimes it don't. Life is like a box of chocolates...
-
I use it when I'm looking for something, but it invariably fails to find something I know is there.
-
Yeah its turd.... always has been.
We are going to be implementing an Open Source Search engine called Sphynx. Apparently the smf search is crap with bit database... and ours is quite big at 689638 Posts in 49665 Topics by 9805 Members.
It might take us a while to get that sorted after we do the forum upgrade.... but its on the list.

cheers fella, the effort is appreciated :happy2: :drinking:

I think this search function is the worst of any forum searches. But hey ho, it's what we got. Any improvement would be appreciated.

It will be sorted out.
It seems to love posts from about 2008/2009.... and ignores everything else. :fighting: :fighting2:
We have tried to rebuild an index on the testforum and it was taking forever (would have taken ~2 weeks) So Sphinx is the way we are going... should be much much better.
-
The old UK Mkivs search engine was worse than this one to be fair. It just made up answers which were not at all relevant, whereas at least here it just ignores stuff.
-
Haven't used the search function more than a few times and it just finds old posts.
Will have to try this new fangled "Advanced" search!
