Title: Veyron VNS-VW Fitted and running
Post by: Apollo on September 16, 2014, 08:17:04 pm
Whilst looking to upgrade my RCD300 to a Sat Nav and BT unit it became very apparent that I would have to spend a lot of £££s if I wanted to stay OEM. Having spoken to @Viking (http://@Viking) on this forum for my options of OEM I decided it was out of my price range so I punted for the OEM copy.

The Veyron VNS-VW is not a bad looking copy, has stacks of features and costing £250 I think a very good unit.

http://www.auto-electronics.com/index.php/veyron-vns-vw.html (http://www.auto-electronics.com/index.php/veyron-vns-vw.html)

I contacted the seller who assured me that it would not give my car any battery drain problems, would be a simple swap and required no extra wiring.

Fitting was straight forward, however it comes with a single Fakra to DIN connector which will work but in reality you will need a twin Fakra adaptor with Diversity. I've had the unit in for a couple of weeks now and I am more than happy with it, yes the software is not OEM and looks different but its workable, the Sat Nav runs Sygic maps which works really well.  BT connects to my iPhone 5S every time without fail, you can stream your music from the phone but controls are limited. BT phonebook is not accessible but you can use Siri to voice dial.

I don't have steering wheel controls or a highline dash so these are untested but it says they will both work without a problem.

Not a bad OEM look and did you have to buy the twin adaptor to get it to work?
Does it boot up with the VW logo?
When you say "software is not OEM and looks different" in what way?
Do you know if you have the 6 player CD in the arm rest will it still control that?

No I am currently using the supplied single adapter and it works ok
Does it boot up with the VW logo?
No, If anyone knows how to make this happen I would love to know
When you say "software is not OEM and looks different" in what way?
Generic interface, nothing like the menu's you would get from an OEM unit. I will post some pics up when I've taken a few.
Do you know if you have the 6 player CD in the arm rest will it still control that?
No idea, there are stacks of leads for various outputs inc iPod, Aux, reverse camera, DVD etc

What is the sound quality like on the head unit? I got told it's not very good when you have it up quite loud? I'm wanting to buy one but I would rather ask someone who already has one :)

I don't hear any difference to the original HU, sound quality is as good if not better.

As way of an update and to ensure anyone contemplating buying one of these has all the facts, recently this unit developed a strange 'fault'. Randomly the colour of the letters and numbers on the radio/SD Card screen changes from white to yellow. All of them not just the odd one, at first I thought it maybe the day/night mode but it does it as I said randomly. Then at any given time will change back to white (normal), I also thought it maybe when the head unit is cold as it first started on a morning when first started.....but it appears to have no pattern.

Switching over to Nav mode and this all works fine without any colour change. The seller has agreed to refund me on receipt of the unit and has even paid for return delivery, I was offered the choice for them to look and repair if necessary but I've opted for a refund as there are plenty of other units on ebay at around £80 cheaper than I have paid for this one.

To re-cap, the unit performs as normal with no functionality problems and it may seem petty to return the unit due to a colour change go the font.  However it could easily be the start of further problems.

Problems so soon but at least the offer of refund etc is good.
Where else have you seen  them for £80 less?
The problem hasn't wanted to make you look around for something else?

Post by: Apollo on October 07, 2014, 03:46:10 pm
eBay have several different versions all look the same but have slight variations of the software display. You get what you pay for and I'm happy enough with the product per say, all in one device for a fraction of the price with the OEM look. No functionality problems or CanBus conflicts purely a cosmetic/display problem that I wasn't willing to live with as the unit was brand new.

I have this unit and whilst its loaded with gadgets the radio reception is awful and sound at loud volume is poor also
didn't expect it to be this poor but its cheap. There must be better units out there?

I have to disagree on the sound quality, mine was spot on. As for radio reception did you use a dual Fakra adaptor with the power feed to enable the diversity option to work?
Title: Re: Veyron VNS-VW Fitted and running

In all honesty I bought the car with the unit fitted already but after the last golf that had the sat nav system and arm rest cd changer the sound was spot on in that one and sounds dire in this one.. I would have to pull the unit out to find out how its been wired in but at a guess id say properly as the tv/dvd/ reverse camera all work ok
Title: Re: Veyron VNS-VW Fitted and running
Post by: Apollo on October 13, 2014, 09:44:38 pm
The car has 2 aerials, it will still work with only 1 but the reception is terrible. The easy choice is to just go with the one.....the other way you have to provide power to the twin Fakra adaptor to enable the best reception to reach the head unit.

Hi Apollo,
I've checked out the prices of RNS510 + BT module - ouch !
Do you have the part number for the dual Fakra adaptor or link ?

Also does the BT handsfree work well?
Cheers

Hi @edd30 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10777) I bought this adaptor but not fitted it as still not got a replacement head unit yet.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Connects2-CT27AA56-VW-Golf-VI-Twin-Double-Fakra-Din-Aerial-Antenna-Adaptor-/171114952664?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item27d73ef7d8 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Connects2-CT27AA56-VW-Golf-VI-Twin-Double-Fakra-Din-Aerial-Antenna-Adaptor-/171114952664?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item27d73ef7d8)

The bluetooth worked fine, had no problems with sound quality through the speakers etc.  As said above I no longer have this unit, but will replace it with the same OEM style unit.

Apollo,
Thanks for the link. I'm seriously thinking about something similar, but with android and can bus, so that it works with my mfsw without an adaptor.

There are plenty on eBay mate, most have CanBus as standard and work with MFSW. However most come from China, i recently bought a replacement forma 'UK seller' only to receive an email saying they had run out of stock but I could have delivery from China.....on 3o days lol so I cancelled and I'm still deciding what to get.

The OEM RNS510, RCD* etc are made in China too, so I'm not surprised the ones we are looking at are as well. EMS should take about a week, not 30 days, China Post is erratic though. Better to get one posted from Hong Kong, usually a lot quicker.

Thanks for the link Chris.

For the cost of the Dynavin, I'd rather get a 2nd hand RNS510.

Yeah but the Dynavin does everything for that cost, and you'd get a 1yr warranty with it.
Buy a 2nd hand rns510 and it could go pop next week.........

AFAIK - Golfs have the FM signal amplifier in the OEM headunit, so when you replace that with a sony etc, thay require an external amplifier, you need something like this.
Your current 2diversity FM fakras will plug in the double blue socket, the normal FM plug then goes into new headunit, and a power supply is needed for blue wire, maybe from back of accessory/cigarette socket?

thanks for replying fella..
I have the veyron unit fitted thats in the start of this thread..
The aerial on the roof is a shark fin and a vw unit.. the radio reception on FM is ok but stations drop out when on the move on AM there is no reception at all so no radio 5 live or gold!!
I took the car to a car audio shop and they removed the unit to test it and they said i need a new aerial which i bought this aerial however has a different plug on the end of its lead (a raku ) im told.
The shark fin aerial has a Fakra connection so now im totally confused..
ive read on here that theres different leads to fit but some work and some dont  powering the antenna etc so really unsure on what route to take now

So have you fitted the connects2 adaptor lead linked to earlier?
I would have thought that would sorted out your FM problems , the single blue wire powers the FM amplifier inside the metal box part to boost the signal, your current 2 aerial fakras plug in twin blue socket end, and single silver FM plug in back of head unit.
There are many types of VW aerials, with many different lead connectors.
Failing all else you may have to take to VW dealer  :ashamed: or let good car audio shop sort it all out for you.

Post by: chrisvectra on February 26, 2015, 02:10:01 pm
Ive not fitted connects2 adaptor lead as ive read that these things dont make any difference to the signal
is there one you would recommend or know of that might work?

its only £9.75 delivered and further in this post member has used it and says it works, worth a punt  :popcornsoda:
I believe you need to amplify the FM signal, which this would......I've never herd of an aerial failing.....

I fitted the connects2 lead this morning it seems to have made a slight difference to the FM signal but has done nothing for the AM signal.
bit of a waste of time and money really and i managed to scratch the climate control panel in the process!! :sad1:

oops sorry to hear that chris.
I wouldn't expect it to have any effect on AM, whats on AM anyway?
The connects thing helped with a sony unit with FM in the wifes MK4.
DAB is what you want anyway

mmmmmm id love Dab in the car but not that clued up in how it all works and if it would work with whats already in the car..

Had hopes this connects lead would sort it

I've got a very similar head unit to this one and the FM reception sucks,  if I put my Alpine unit back in the FM reception is perfect again.

My local car stereo shop who I trust confirmed that most of these units don't have great tuners built in.  A few they've found with the antenna connection poorly soldering inside. I checked this on mine and its soldered in place fine.

In the end I gave up and bought a Veyron V-Dab+ unit to get DAB radio.  It works perfectly and I get great reception even with the antenna just laid inside the car.  As a bonus it has a USB lead sticking out of it that I can use to charge my phone / ipad etc...

Yep, thats the one.  It just plugs in the lighter/power socket and the antenna comes with windscreen suckers so you can run it behind the glovebox and up the a-pillar.

I didn't want to do that and rarely have back seat passengers so just ran the aerial lead along the centre console and up the back of the passenger seat.  I've looped the top of the antenna in a knot around the headrest supports.  You can't really see it and it works just fine that way.

There are some other more professional ones that you can hardwire in and plug into the aux-in of the stereo but they're a bit more pricey and a bit more of a faff.  It's worth giving the V-DAB+ a go to at least see if you get a decent signal in your area.  Buy it from Amazon and then you can always return it if you find there isn't much coverage in your area.

personally I wouldn't want anything plugged into lighter socket. Some are hidden away with remote control, some work with vw steering wheel controls..

I bought one of these units coverage is fine but because the FM signal is so poor in the car this keeps dropping out and sounds worse then the FM.. I thought that this would plug into the Aux and play thru there but it come with a jack plug and the Veyron head unit only has a USB and a ipod connector

How about RNS315?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-VW-RNS-315-DAB-BLUETOOTH-sat-nav-navigation-Golf-Passat-Jetta-Tiguan-RNS-510-/251358094615?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3a861c2517
I don't think there is a battery drain issue with this headunit. Has Bluetooth and DAB in it, so a lot cheaper than adding these to RNS510, hopefully an expert will add more advice.... :sad1:

WOW that's a bargain for vw quality, let us know what you think the sound quality is like. Iam really happy with my rcd510 DAB.

Yeah I took a gamble on it.

Was a breaker selling it, sloppy description and not the best photo's

Need's the code and GPS puck, but for Sub £200 shipped (UK seller with 14 Day money back) I thought it was certainly worth a hit.

Just got to get Eddie to sort my Can Bus out, fit a Mic and he's doing me Cruise at the same time, good to go!

Hey Chris how about something like this pioneer, linked by another member in another thread
http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/head-units/double-din/pioneer-avh-x3600dab
You'd need to contact them about the rear camera, but the spec says it can switch to rear camera.., you'd need facia and wiring adaptor as well...

Hey fella thanks for that seems like a good piece of kit for the money - not that pleasant to look at but can't have all ways I guess lol
Seems to have a good write-up

Hi Phil,

Is your car a Mk5, if it is the Nav directions will not work with a red dot MFD. Or so I am led to believe.

I paid bout the same as you did for my RNS315 Dab and can't fault it :)

Mine has the full red dot highline display and the Nav directions work perfectly with a RNS510 Version R LED SSD unit  :happy2:

Yeah, thats what I've heard about the RNS 315, although I have a Mid line MFD so won't be an issue.

I just wanted Nav and to be able to listen to something other than Radio 1 or 2 :)

oh and something more pleasing to the eye.

The navigation in the MFD is cool. But i end up using my phone most of the time as i struggle to get the route i want with the RNS510.

I've not fitted the 315 yet....so don't even know what Maps are loaded :)

Fingers Crossed it's relatively up to date, its form a 2011 Car so probably more up to date than my 2006 Garmin lol

+1 for info on that stereo above.

Selling the wife's car soon and will be removing the much dearer Zenec HU, but want something in to retain the aftermarket camera, OPS, nav and bluetooth as they are good selling points.
