Title: Anyone fancy the boot pop mod for £11?
Post by: Whitt_tdi on September 17, 2014, 10:08:16 pm
Found these on ebay and thought why not, cheaper than spending £65 on the full kit , fitted them yesterday and works a treat,

I saw these earlier while browsing on eBay. Did wonder if they were any good.
Might have grab some.

Any videos of it on yours?

I will try and upload one tomorrow or fri if I get chance but it works perfect even with the standard struts, may upgrade to the stiffer pins that they sell with the other kit just to be on the safe side but pops every time and goes all the way up as it should.

Heavy duty die springs. A fraction of that cost from a shop like cromwells hardware

They where dearer here but cromwells sold them for £1.something

One thing to check is that there is enough 'spare room' to fit the spring when the boot is closed lol.

I'll try and get a video done. I don't know how much room there is but you can shut it without too much fuss. I'd possibly consider taken a bit off the springs if needed but not noticed any issues, but they have only been on for three days

The first time i saw the spring method being used, the guy was using a valve spring out of a ford transit  :signLOL:

Should you slam it so hard?

Got an installation guide?

I gave it a slam to show it's possible to shut with having to put force on the boot lid itself.it does spring back if you don't push it hard enough but people said this is the same with he stiffer struts. It's a good cheap mod so far

There's a video demo on the Bristol Facebook page

Cannot find that demo on the page, have you got the link.

Got my springs this morning but there are also 2 rubber washers and several metal ones so unsure how to fit

It was meant to say briskoda Facebook page. I tried to copy a link but couldn't, I'll try from the laptop

If it helps, the eBay users email/iMessage is; shahriarak8@gmail.com maybe they will advise you on fitting

Cheers, Read the ebay post and said you did not need to use the washers if worked without. Just popped the springs in and changed VAG settings and works a treat. I might try adding some washers to see what difference it makes.

It does, cannot fully remember you need to change 1 setting which I did. Really easy mod though

FYI tried fitting these, now I'm not sure if I already had a damaged or weakened pin but I fitted them and the first time I put the boot down the force of the spring being compressed bent one pin that the strut attaches to on the boot lid,  great... This caused a huge gap to form between boot lid and rear quarter... Yes the boot pop worked very well and was pretty impressed in all honesty,  but I didn't want to see it rip the pin off so removed quickly and managed to bend the pin back in line.
In the essence of being impartial, I have always had a weak opening boot so can't be sure if one side had a faulty strut and/or pin that made it perform this way. The theory is spot on, and the trail run I did was impressive. So food for thought.  Cheers

A weak opening? Sounds painful...  :signLOL:

I'm interested in doing this mod, but wondered if you need to have a boot that "pops" already? Mine seems to simply unlock from the remote, not pop... is there a way to change this in VAGCOM / VCDS? I've got a 2005 mk5 DSG GTI AXX

Hmmm I like your thinking Mike. Got a Cromwell store just a mile away from work too. I find the Octavia boot lid a bit heavier than the Golf. I know it's a bigger panel/unit but the dampers don't seem to give it the same assistance. Time for some springs I think.
